How do you go about getting a swipe coming off of a player in a photoshop piece?

What I want to do is something similar to this:

it has a swipe coming off of it, I understand that the way Juke did this one was he made an oval and distorted it, but my question is, there are many ways to distort it and which ways do you use?

any other techniques on creating swiping 'swoosh' type of effects would be appreciated.
