Everyone has been posting their mocks based on players they like. One thing is apparent to me as I look at this teams need with unbiased opinions. First Dallas cannot reach for players to fill positions for need. If someone like Mike Evans makes it to 16 and no team wants to give up enough value, Dallas has to take the player. This team is not a few players away from competing. They have some serious cap issues and cannot afford to take lower rated talent to fill the DT and DE spots. If need meets value then great, but this team cannot simply trade down just to trade down. It worked out great last year, but that doesn't mean Jerry Jones didn't get the "Deliverance" treatment. Also this team cannot do anything stupid this year. No TEs or CBs this year. This team cannot waste picks for depth players. They can also not draft potential players. They need to draft players that can come in and start right away even if it is just at an adequate level.
Lastly does anyone know how Will Sutton's weight loss is going? He was way too fat at the Sr bowl. He would have been better off weighing in at 290 and just playing his game. I wonder if he can get down to 300 lbs for the nfl combine which is his targeted goal.
1st round Aaron Donald DT This is guy is going to be the best fit for this defense. Dallas needs someone with pure explosion to come in and start right away. The guy looks like he is shot out of a cannon with his burst and plays with a nonstop motor. Reminds me a lot of John Randle and this team cannot get greedy and try to take him in the 2nd. He will not be there. Trading down is also not a good idea. Someone will realize that this guy is a football player and take him early if Dallas doesn't.
2nd round Ed Reynolds FS A very good size prospect with adequate athleticism. He is not as athletic as Dix or Pryor but is much smarter. Players at Stanford have to be pretty smart just to play and this guy has an extreme amount of football intelligence. A very similar player to Sean Lee in that his instincts allow him to play much faster than his timed speed. This team needs a safety to come in and start, not a project like Wilcox, Heath, or Johnson. This guy is ready to play now which is what this team needs. In time Wilcox may be a great player based on his measurables. Reynolds will never have that kind of potential but he can come in and start from day 1 and not get toasted like the Dallas project safeties are right now. This move will solidify the secondary.
3rd round Carraun Reid DT. This guy has strength, speed, and a hard working ethic. He will rise up draft boards based on his workout numbers. He has a quick burst and holds up really well against double teams. He would make a good insurance policy against Donald getting hurt and could start at the 1 tech to get a better push from the middle. A very good player who should go before players with potential like Ferguson and Johnson. Dallas needs someone who can come in and start and he has already maxed out his frame. While I like Quarles, he is a little soft in the middle. Reid is absolutely shredded and is ready to start now.
4th round First off most of us have been wanting Dallas to go top heavy on the Dline this year. The lack of pass rush was evident all year long when Hatcher could not get home on the pass rush. With that said I think Dallas is better off at DE than most of us think. George Selvie is a good solid starter and Crawford has good potential from the strong side. Ben Bass can also lose 10 lbs and back up Crawford on the strong side. I think Bass would be better off at DE even in the 4-3 as he was getting manhandled at the DT position. Everrette Brown and Martez Wilson are also very intriguing prospects. Both of these guys have a very good burst and Wilson has elite athleticism. He just needs to put on some weight this offseason to take some snaps from the DE position. I also think when its all said and done Ware will take a paycut. He has to realize that no team is going to pay him lots of money on past production. Between Ware, Selvie, Crawford, Wilson, Brown, and Bass this team has enough DEs. With that said the guard position is not so good. Leary's knee could go out at any minute which is why Dallas should take Brandon Thomas G or Chris Watt G. One of these guys should be available in the 4th round and both are ready to play right now. This is important because Dallas cannot draft project players anymore. They need people to come in and compete right away. I don't think either guy can outright beat Bernadeau or Leary for a job, but insurance is needed so the season doesn't tank if Dallas loses a guard.
5th round I have no idea who the best available linebacker will be but Dallas needs to jump on him. Every year prospects fall as teams draft based on need. This year will be no different and I suspect that a 3rd round graded player will be here. Shayne Skov from Stanford will still be here I think. He is not an exceptional athlete but his is very smart. He would serve as a good backup in case Sean Lee gets hurt again. I liked Halloman better as a WOLB with his speed and instincts. He played a hell of a game against Philly at ILB but I think he would serve this team much better by keeping Bruce "I don't care" Carter off the field. Drafting Skov in the 5th round would allow Halloman to concentrate on learning one position.
7th round NT Garrison Smith This guy played NT and still got a ton of sacks. I don't think he will be a star but he is exactly the kind of player you want from the 1 tech position. Having Smith would allow Dallas to give Hayden a much needed breather during a few games. Smith would also get good pressure from the middle and collapse the pocket allowing others to make plays.
I'm too lazy to post of the rest of the draft. This is the must have list though that Dallas needs to follow. They need to draft 2 DTs high and take a good 1 tech in the lower rounds. They need a starting FS in round 2 to solidify the secondary. As much as everyone wants a DE, guard depth is a much bigger need. Another linebacker in round 5 is needed to keep Carter away from a starting position.
