Let me start off and say that I think Marvin Austin and Drake Nevis are destined for great things in this defensive scheme. They are both a little overweight right now because teams wanted them to get bigger and I think it affected their speed on the field. I think once they practice for about 8 weeks, we will see totally different players. Their speed at DT will open up the middle opposite from Hatcher. Hayden has played his heart out and I respect him for stepping up after Ratliff turded out. But Austin and Nevis are better players in this scheme. They will not show it right now, but at the end of the year these two will peak and the Dline will be truly special.

Secondly Montgomery will not be a Cowboy. Unlike Austin and Nevis, he was not fattened up like a little piggy in Houston. Austin wanted to play around 305 lbs in NY and Coughlin and his staff wanted him to play at around 320. Nevis was also asked to put on weight to better play the run. Some players do not play well if they put on too much weight. Sometimes you just have to let guys play at their natural weight so they can be great in 1 area instead of being mediocre in all areas. Montgomery was not asked to put on weight. He simply struggled to make the transition to an outside linebacker. On top of that, he was milking his injuries much like Ratliff so he could get paid to warm the bench. Like Ratliff, Houston decided to cut bait despite the draft pick and refused to give him anymore free money. Team owners talk amongst themselves and I suspect Montgomery will not be signed until the year is over on a future's contract. Owners will back each other up and refuse to sign turds even if they are talented. Signing them to contracts sets a bad precedent. Young players will simply act like turds if they don't fear being without work.

Jay Ratliff will never play another down of football again. I know his agent is stating that he is already working out, but owners will not want to touch the guy. He got paid big money when he didn't have to get it and he rewarded Jerry Jones loyalty by shutting down. If owners sign him, this will set a bad precedent among players that they can get themselves cut and double dip with a new team. I think owners will stand with Jerrah on this one and they should. This guy should never put on a uniform ever again. Signing him to any contract would only encourage other players to pull similar stunts.

Doubt the rest of the NFL is wrong about these guys. More likely is if the Cowboys are lucky they will find one rotation guy in the bunch.

In my opinion, you give too much credit to the owner's "good ol' boy club" mentality. If they were actually colluding against a player with a bad reputation, TO would have never been signed after Philadelphia and Randy Moss would never have played in New England. I will admit that those two examples are guys with special abilities, but owners are competitive enough that if they think a player can improve their team, they will take a look, and sometimes a chance. Ratliff was too good in his prime for teams to simply disregard him. He will get a chance somewhere. I just hope it isn't in the NFC East. (but, my prediction is Washington or Houston.) I think Ratliff's skill set is better suited to the 4-3, but apparently he thinks he is better as a 3-4 NT. With that said, I don't think it will be this season, simply because he is getting paid anyway, and he can avoid the legal issues by continuing to claim injury. (his agent is looking for a signing bonus payday and not looking at his client's best interest.) Off-season, teams will be courting him.

Montgomery on the other hand, is a different story. Some teams took him off their draft boards because of his reputation as a slacker, and then he gets to the pros and bolsters that reputation. He might get a shot when teams start conceding the season, or start getting desperate. If the Texans thought he had starter potential, they would not have released him as they did, they would have tried to trade him for a draft pick. (my guess would be that they did and found no takers.)

If Pacman Jones got an opportunity to play after his Cowboys debacle and the other legal issues, then Ratliff most certainly will, assuming he checks out okay medically.

You might have a point about MA, but Nevis is a 4-3 player and he just didn't fit in the 3-4 scheme and that's why he didn't work in SD.
