The NFL has plans to permanently honor Deacon Jones, just three weeks after the death of the Hall of Fame defensive lineman. Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to announce the creation of the Deacon Jones Award, given annually to the player with the most sacks in a season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Jones was credited with coining the term "sack" during his 14-year career in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers and Washington Commanders. The eight-time Pro Bowler was unofficially credited with 26 sacks in 1967 and 24 in 1968, although sacks were not an official stat at the time. Instead, the official single-season record for sacks is 22.5, held by Michael Strahan.

I like it. Too bad it came late in Ware's career. He could've had a shot at the all-time record.

I agree. That's pretty fitting. I'm glad the NFL is doing something like this.

He was the king of the head slap when it was legal, come off the line and take the right hand and slap that OL player upside the head to get him off dazed and off balance. Ah the good old days. lol

I was going to use the 1st Doomsday of Bob Lilly, Jethro Pugh, George Andrie and Larry Cole, they were the introduction of pro football to me.

That is awesome as Deacon Jones did not grow up with him. Sorry but heard a lot of awesome things he has done. On and off the field!
