No, you see the Giants will be beating us so badly by throwing 30 yard slants to Cocky, that Coughlin will feel sorry for us and give us a free extra point try. Larry Allen gives Cortez the evil eye, and he kicks it in for the score.

You really can score just 1 point

Uh, not in the NFL you can't. Safety is 2 points....

But, I'm PRETTY sure you're joking.

There really is a rule about a one point safety on an EP try.

It happened last year in the A&M/tu game and in the 70s in a Dolphins/Steelers game

I'll be damned, you're right. I knew this was a Canadian football rule, but honestly had no idea it was an NFL rule.

1. After a touchdown, the scoring team is allowed a try during one scrimmage down. The ball may be spotted anywhere between the inbounds lines, two or more yards from the goal line. The successful conversion counts one point by kick; two points for a successful conversion by touchdown; or one point for a safety.

How could the kicking team get a safety? the ball's dead as soon as the defense gets possession.

the rule must be talking about the defensive team getting a safety if they can push the offensive team 98 yards back the other direction, without ever actually possessing the ball. That might be tough.

someone please explain this rule to me, if anyone understands it.

Theoretically, the kicking team could have a kick blocked or fumble the ball and have it go back into their endzone and recover it and be tackle by the defense. Highly unlikely, but it has happened before.

More on the one point safety, for those who care and didn't know this could happen in the NFL.

One point is awarded for a safety (see below). In college football, this can occur when the defense gains control of the ball, then fumbles it out of bounds in its own end zone. In the NFL, since the try ends once the defense gains possession, a safety can only be scored if a defensive player bats a loose (fumbled) ball out of bounds in the end zone.

It would be really weird to have that happen. First, the ball would have to go 98 yards the other way with the defense never gaining possession of it, so the offensive team would have to be the one keeping play alive, not realizing that they could just stop and the play's over.

I never knew an nfl team could score 1 point. Has that ever happened really? I think a long time ago, the play wasn't dead when the defense gained possession and they could take it back for 1 point. I could see that happening.

(edited)

(Ok, I just saw your post. Thanks. the offense gets one point if the defense bats the ball out of it's own end zone, without gaining possession. that makes more sense, and could happen.)

so a team can't really score just 1 point. Right?

I'm still trying to find proof of it ever happening in the NFL, but no luck yet.

Yeah, that's my understanding of it, if it were to or ever has happened. Another excerpt! This is great stuff, or I'm just bored.

David from Jacksonville: Someone asked me about a scenario where a safety is worth one point. The NFL rulebook references this one-point safety for a try attempt: “After a touchdown, the scoring team is allowed a try during one scrimmage down. The successful conversion counts one point by kick; two points for a successful conversion by touchdown; or one point for a safety.” It goes on to say the defensive team can never score on a try. If this is the case, how in the world does the offense score a one-point safety on a try attempt?

Vic: The offense is awarded a one-point safety on a try attempt if the following occurs: The offense's placement holder bobbles the snap from center and one of the defenders muffs, bats or kicks the ball out of the back of the end zone.

Edit: Tried to make it all less confusing. I was beginning to confuse myself ;)
