i dont think signing newman to a huge long term contract is smart. he is about to hit 30 and he's been showing signs of physical decline, injuries, the last few years.
I'd love to see your proof of that.

You do know he made his first pro bowl this year, right?

There are no blue chip corners in this draft. The last draft that had those were Pacman, Rolle and Rogers. None of those guys have had the impact that teams probably wanted for them.

There are some very good corners with the potential to be great in Jenkins, McKlevin, but those guys aren't in the same league as when Newman was considered blue-chip or even Deangelo Hall.

I agree.

The 1st corner may not be that much better than the 5th corner. You just have to hope your scouting department comes up clutch.

Its a deep class for corners but there just isnt 1 great corner although when I watched South Florida play this year I was very impressed with their guy.

I think Talib is as close to blue-chip as you can get.

But Jenkins, Cason, McKelvin, there's alot of depth. We've got a good chance of getting one of them, and hopefully having them develop into a solid #2 corner, if not a good #1.

Tnew was injured this year. Please give details of his physical decline and other problems prior to this.

i never said the guy was just gonna start falling apart, but you can see that he is starting to get dinged up easily. this year he has had the achilles injury, followed by the knee and then a tweak of the ankle. i think he will be good for a few more years but like i said, throwing too many years at an older corner where speed, quickness and reaction are the some of the most important aspects of the position might not be a great idea. if you can sign
Nnamdi Asomugha for the same amount or less then that would be a smarter investment then signing newman long term.

i just call it as i see it. i dont nut hug on any player just because im a fan. i was the biggest roy fan when he was drafted and for the first few years but ive been calling for his head for over 2 years now along with the head of julius jones for the 2 years. i got blasted when i told everyone that crayton was at best a very average #3 receiver and at best a slightly below average #2 and this is when everyone was anointing him the second coming of alvin harper as the undisputed #2. i was wrong on canty and i still believe im right about spears.

do i still believe that newman is a all pro type corner? yes! my only question is for how long? do we still want him to count 8 million on our cap when he is on the decline two years from now and still have 4 to 5 years left on his contract?

I would love Jenkins or McKelvin on our team, but I think both are going to end up going top 15.

Just to throw a name out there of a guy I like who I think will be available at #28 and not just to appease the all-knowing Arizona moderating god, Antoine Cason.

Few players have a combine as crucial as Talib's. If he can run a 4.4, I think he'll wiggle his way into the top 20. If he can't, I think he'll have too many whispers as to whether he's a FS playing CB (a la Henry) that could decrease his stock.

I do like his overall skills though and he is from Texas, so who knows if that will be a factor.

When Newman turns 33-34 he will in essencse be turning 30 due to him not being in the league as long as the normal player entering his 30s.

Possibly, you just don't know. DB's and OL have a much longer shelf life historically than skill players, but it differs among individuals. A guy who never gets enough credit I believe is Darrell Green who played into his 40's and was still effective. If Newman could have that type of impact, it'd be a boone to us.

I think Newman is an elite player, even at this age. Unfortunatley, injuries are starting to catch up to the most crucial appendage on the human body. The foot. A hurt knee is workable. A hurt foot is a death sentence for a defensive back.

I'd rather have a hurt foot than a screwed up knee any day of the week.

I'm pretty sure Jenkins already said he was going back to school sometime last week, which pushes the talent level down and gives us a not-as-good choice when it's finnaly our turn.

Yessur, Jenkins is going back for his Senior Year at Ohio State, along with Laurenitis. Two big-time players who could have been Top 10 picks in this years draft.

I bet you weren't calling for him to replaced when he was getting all those ints early in the season before he got hurt.

After Henry's first year I wanted him gone.

I see your point but do you honestly think he's gonna get a 6-7 year deal when he's up? I hope we sign him for the next 3-5 years with an option to extend later...
