OK guys, with Newman possibly in and out with his foot injury, how much do you guys think it would cost up to go get Asante Samuel in draft picks, or trade player exchange.

Your thoughts and opinions. Personally, I would like for the cowboys to try courtney brown at cornerback, but Wade Phillips says he doesnt have the hips to turn as a cornerback.

No way do I want to give up anything for an established starting CB. Even if newman was gone for the year, which he's not (expected to play the first game), I would not panic and give up the future picks.

We'll play with what we've got....Newman will be fine...so will the Cowboys....injuries are part of the game.

Maybe we could all pitch in and get Courtney Brown a hip transplant.

i think everyone's freaking out a wee bit much with Newman being out for the rest of the preseason.. I think he'll come back strong as ever and have his best season yet and make it to the Pro Bowl finally..

If they would take our pick and not Clevelands I would do it.

Your getting a top 5 corner for what ever spot we'll be picking at? That well worth it.

I am going by what a reporter that knows football,

Todd Archer reports that Terence Newman has been diagnosed with a case of plantar fasciitis, which is fancy doctor talk for severe pain in the heel. It's likely that the condition will nag Newman all season.

Safe to say the odds of Newman returning punts on a consistent basis have significantly decreased. Patrick Crayton didn't exactly inspire confidence in his ability to handle that role with his performance against the Broncos. Wade Phillips has said he doesn't see Isaiah Stanback as a punt returner. Maybe this is the crack that allows Jerheme Urban to get his foot in the 53-man roster door at Miles Austin's expense.

Or maybe the Cowboys ought to consider signing Eddie Drummond, the return specialist cut by the Lions yesterday. Drummond averaged 10.6 yards on punt returns last season. He has returned four punts and two kickoffs for TDs in his five-year career.

The problem with Drummond is that he can't do anything but return punts and kicks. He can't play receiver. I asked somebody in the know about him and got an emphatic no as a response.

He knows football, and he says from reports that he has read on that type of injury, it occurs on and off, till it is fully healed. I was just thinking, if Samuel doesnt come in, or if the patriots front office, gets him to come in to trade him, what would it cost to get him?

Granted, we probably need to wait till after saturday night, and i still wish wade phillips would try courtney brown at cornerback, but just what if newmans injury is off and on all year long, we need a shut down corner, and anthony henry sure isnt one. Also, remember, wade phillips said that the other cornerbacks, no one has stepped up to take over as 3rd cornerback from the pack, and they may not be that good anyway.

so, do we stand pat, and just wait to see if newman can recover, because if newman cant, we dont have a shut down corner, and thats where teams will attack us.

They might take our number one and Jason Hatcher... they hate paying people.

31smackdown,thats way too much, if they were to say our # 2 pick or even our # 1 pick, but not the lowest pick, clevelands hopefully then i am for that too, we need a young cornerback, since newman is 29, henry is 31.

Reporters that know football? If and when the organization starts running around looking for CB then I may be concerned as it stands know I trust our trainers and team doctor over some reporters view point.

Less of a concern for Phillips is the effect Newman's injury will have on his role as a punt returner. Newman, who split time with Patrick Crayton returning punts last year, hasn't returned a punt in two preseason games.

That doesn't mean he won't return punts this year, though. Phillips said Newman has practiced with the punt return team, and could fill the role once he returns.

"I know he's been working on it the whole time, we just haven't put him in a preseason game," Phillips said. "And he did it last year, so I have confidence that he could come back, certainly, and return them against the Giants."

Personally, I wait and see. It could nag him all year and yet it also could just as easy disappear.

Samuels would cost to much and mortage the future. He is good but I don't see him in the same class as Newman or a Champ Bailey. If our front seven is going to be as good as everyone suspects we don't need Samuels.

Case in point, name the 4 starters in the secondary of the Chargers last year. None of them are even close to Samuels class or Roy Williams or even Henry at this point.

As to punt returns, Urban will probably make the team in that regard but it will probably make us keep 7 corners to start the season.

WR - Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Stanback, Hurd, Urban, Austin(?)
CB - Henry, Newman, Glenn, Jones, Reeves, Thomas, Ball

Austin could be the odd man out since Stanback can return kickoffs with Thompson. Don't see Butler or Brown making the 53 squad but see them on the practice squad.

sorry doomsday, i forgot to post, the reporter talked to the cowboys staff, about newmans injury, etc, he didnt say whom, but he talked to knowledgeable people that knows the game, and players.

so, thats why i am saying what he says, is pretty good, another radio show talk guy that i know, said same thing about him, he does research, talks to players, team officials, to get better knowledge, so if he is concerned, that newmans injury will be on and off, then i am worried alittle.

true, we cant have all good players, but i was thinking, we do need a young cb, so if we could get samuel at a decent price, and not cost us an arm and leg, because the cowboys probably would look at a young cb in next years draft,

What do other teams do when one of their starters goes down? Do they mortgage their futures by giving up their future draft picks? Or do they have enough confidence that one of their younger players can pick up the slack until the starter is ready.

I think we will be just fine with our back ups.

The staff does not seem to be overly concerned at this point, heck Phillips was saying yesterday that Newman should be ready for the Giants game and is willing to use him at PR if they need to. I'm not doubting the injury but to what extent is the injury going to affect him evidently they feel giving him the pre-season games off should do the trick. We will see in the meantime No I don't think Dallas is going after a high price FA for an injury they don't seem as concerned as the fans are.

Dan Snyder? Is that you?

Dude-you play WAY too much Madden. For one, many NFL players, as well as other pro athletes, have had this injury and played fine during the season(i.e. Bobby Taylor). And two, last I checked, Newman wasn't on crutches or anything.

RELAX.

Samuels isn't going anywhere unless he gets top money. Jerry is already going to have to pay Newman soon. You can't have that much money tied up in too two cb's.
