heres my thought, never trade draft picks, especially in august.

and samuels would be way way way way too expensive.

how would in the world would you pay samuels, newman, romo and two first round draft picks next year?

I hear Samuel and N.E. are near to an agreement.

Yes, Word out is that he's signing and reporting next week. Patriots are not trading him. Like Romo, they want to see Samuel back up last years season before giving a monster long term contract.

The injury takes 2 to 3 weeks of rest to fully heal...if you do the proper stretching and wear the proper orthotics it shouldn't return.

Also it's an injury that hurts AFTER exercise, and doesn't really bother you once you have warmed up.

Personally, I wait and see. It could nag him all year and yet it also could just as easy disappear.

Samuels would cost to much and mortage the future. He is good but I don't see him in the same class as Newman or a Champ Bailey. If our front seven is going to be as good as everyone suspects we don't need Samuels.

Case in point, name the 4 starters in the secondary of the Chargers last year. None of them are even close to Samuels class or Roy Williams or even Henry at this point.

As to punt returns, Urban will probably make the team in that regard but it will probably make us keep 7 corners to start the season.

WR - Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Stanback, Hurd, Urban, Austin(?)
CB - Henry, Newman, Glenn, Jones, Reeves, Thomas, Ball

Austin could be the odd man out since Stanback can return kickoffs with Thompson. Don't see Butler or Brown making the 53 squad but see them on the practice squad.
Urban is trying punt returns in preseason, but its a stretch to think he is actually good enough to do it in a real game. He is not going to be our punt returner. At worse its going to be Crayton again.

Why is everyone so stressed out about this?

The fact that Newman WON'T be returning punts is GREAT. Personally, I'd rather have a bag lady doing so than to risk Newman further injury.

Does Tyson Thompson not have the stones or the hands to be a punt returner?

Less of a concern for Phillips is the effect Newman's injury will have on his role as a punt returner. Newman, who split time with Patrick Crayton returning punts last year, hasn't returned a punt in two preseason games.

That doesn't mean he won't return punts this year, though. Phillips said Newman has practiced with the punt return team, and could fill the role once he returns.

"I know he's been working on it the whole time, we just haven't put him in a preseason game," Phillips said. "And he did it last year, so I have confidence that he could come back, certainly, and return them against the Giants

Asante would cost too much, both money and draft picks. I wouldn't even go there now until we know more about the extent of TNew's injury.

wait untill the draft and get the top CB if he is a top 10 pick. Don't do ANYTHING rash right now.

No way do I want to give up anything for an established starting CB. Even if newman was gone for the year, which he's not (expected to play the first game), I would not panic and give up the future picks.

We'll play with what we've got....Newman will be fine...so will the Cowboys....injuries are part of the game.

I agree totally with this take. The last thing we need to do is give up draft picks and sign this guy to a big contract as we're going to have to lock Newman up soon. You can't spend franchise player money at every position.

I would be suprised if Samuel has half the year he had last year this year. At one time he was a "plug in" on that defense... replacing Law or Milloy?? I forget which one...

IMHO, NE is pretty deep in the secondary anyways. They don't exactly have a bunch of Law's and Milloy's on the depth chart, but they get the job done nonetheless.

Heres a thought. Trade for Antrel Rolle and let Wade coach him up. Word has it, hes been demoted and is riding the bench as Arizona's nickel. Probably wouldn't have to cough up a first for him.

What do other teams do when one of their starters goes down? Do they mortgage their futures by giving up their future draft picks? Or do they have enough confidence that one of their younger players can pick up the slack until the starter is ready.

I think we will be just fine with our back ups.

The Deadskins do...

#1. We're not making the trade.

#2. I'm not convinced Samual is that good.

#3. I'm not that concerned about Newman-- yet.

Asante Samuel is good if you've watched a Patriots game you know hes one of the top 5 Corners in the league and any top 5 Corner in the NFL is worth a 1st round pick.

I believe we would have to give up the kitchen sink for him, nonetheless.

Either way-NOBODY is worth that.

I agree.

If we could get him for OUR first round pick and nothing else i'd do it in a second.

Is that based on one year's performance? last years?

Hey.. I am not knocking the guy... I would like to see if he could have consecutive good season before I "annoint" or "crown" him one of the top 5...

AND... if he had another season like last I still question him being worth a #1(would depend on where we were picking of course)
