Just like Barber's contract, Newman's contract extension is very favorable for the next two seasons and balloons in 2010, the scheduled uncapped season.
The only new bonus he received is the $12 million signing bonus. As expected, his base salaries for the first two seasons are the minimums for his experience level -- $605,000 this season and $895,000 in 2009. He had some bonus prorations remaining from his old contract, and those stay on his cap number for 2008 and 2009. His new cap hits for those seasons are $3,617,743 for 2008 (up from $2,429,160 before the extension) and $3,901,028 for 2009.
In 2010, the currently scheduled uncapped season, he has a guaranteed salary of $9 million. If the cap gets extended before then, we could prorate all but the minimum salary over the remainder of his contract, dropping his cap number from $11 million to less than $5 million.
None of his base salaries from 2011 to 2014 are guaranteed.
Here are his cap numbers --
2008 $3,617,743
2009 $3,901,028
2010 $11,000,000 (first scheduled uncapped season)
2011 $10,000,000
2012 $8,016,000
2013 $9,600,417
2014 $7,500,000
The value of his contract (the money he would receive from 2008 through 2014) is $51,616,417 over seven years. He previously was scheduled to earn $1,416,417 in base salary this season, which is why it was reported as a "six-year extension for $50.2 million." And the total value (including bonus prorations previously paid for his 2008 and 2009 seasons) is $53,635,188 over seven seasons.
