Best corner we have and one of the leaders on the field.
We sure need him and it's going to be tough without him for awhile.

Wow, this is horrible news.

Isn't that why we drafted Mike Jenkins then?

Remember back in April when everyone here was SCREAMING for Jerry to draft DeSean Jackson?

Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm "relieved" that Newman's going to miss some extended time(he IS our second best D player on the team, after all)...

What I'm saying is that last year, the best we had was Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones-both of whom were getting schooled by #3 options. Even with Newman out, I just DON'T see that happening this year.

If I remember correctly, even though Newman signed a lucrative deal in the offseason, isn't there an option in his deal where we could cut him and not take a cap hit after a year or 2?

Anyhow-Jenkins will be a franchise player for this team...book it.

That wasn't the case at all. In fact, more did not want Jackson than did.

I agree with what has been said. I know Newman will be a loss to us for the time he's out and maybe this is the reason he hasn't played so well recently, but Now is the time for the youngsters to step up and show what they have.

We may be pleasantly surprised.:crossed:

I'm hoping, Newman will not require an operation and will only need rest. Rest healed the groin injury. He's an elite football player, and his play has been elite on this team for five years, regardless of what some people who don't know what they are talking about say.

Jerry Jones does a poll with other GMs in the league, and they rate his players, and he rates their players. Newman has been rated as high as number one on this list by many NFL general managers. Jerry Jones said one thing was clear after he conducted his coaching interviews: Terence Newman is your best player.

You can disagree with that if you want, but some of the ignorant statements being said about him now are beyond believe. It makes me angry to see one of the hardest working players on the team get smeared by bloggers when he is down. It doesn't take much courage to kick someone when they are down. Terence Newman doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. He has given his heart and soul for the Cowboys and prevented big plays, made big plays, and saved points for 6 years. The only time Dallas has stopped Santana Moss is when Newman covered him all over the field at Dallas in 2006. Go back and watch that game again. Newman put a stop to his domination.

Who else has shut Steve Smith down twice while covering him all over the field.? It wasn't Ronde Barber. It wasn't DeAngelo Hall. Heck, they used to play him twice a year. Who was it?

You can't play if you are injured. Newman played through the foot problem last year, he played hurt. Some people don't seem to remember that. They don't remember him playing hurt in 2004 and putting up a 5.8 YPA in a doomed secondary. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007, and it wasn't even his best season, imo. He should have multiple Pro Bowls. DeAngelo Hall has them, and he didn't deserve them. Your guy did.

There is a reason Jerry Jones showed him the Jack, Jack. As for the "age" nonsense, Newman was injured on a play where a guy fell on him and caught him with a knee, and his body must have been caught in an awkward position when this happened in a non-conact drill. It isn't like he was just running and hurt his groin. A 24 year old would have been injured.

Terence Newman is a class act and does significant charity work in the Dallas area. He is an elite player who has never been in trouble off the field. He is an elite player who never promoted himself. He has done nothing to deserve some of the treatment he is getting on this board.

When you were happy after beating Carolina on Christmas Eve, you should have sent Newman a Christmas card for putting it on Steve Smith.

When you were happy after beating the Commanders in 2006, you should have sent Newman a thank you for shutting down Santana Moss.

When you were happy about beating the Colts in 2006, you should have thanked Newman for shutting down Dallas Clark in the slot. Clark had zero catches againt him that day, and Clark put up over 100 yards while he abused Champ Bailey out of the slot.

When you were happy about beating Buffalo in 2007, you should thank Terence Newman for picking off Edwards and shutting down Lee Evans.

When you were happy about beating the Commanders in 2007, you should thank Newman for picking off Jason Campbell and saving a win with his back to the goalline.

I could go on and on, but I will stop, because the true football people here on this blog know Terence Newman's value and how high of a level he has played at for the Dallas Cowboys.

If he has surgery and no complications, he's prob gone 6-8 weeks at most and should be close to 100% once he returns. That would put him back in time for the stretch run in December and for the playoffs.

Thats all true, but Newman is at an age where injuries are more likely to happen. Dallas should have probably Franchised him and let him play out his contract. I really think Jenkins and Scandrick are both the real deal. Newman is an elite corner when healthy, but I don't know how healthy he will be in future years.

That's what I was thinking. He could have the surgery and actually be back in plenty of time for the late-season push.

Not saying I can tell the future, because of course I can't, but I had a feeling all offseason that this year we'd have some adversity early in the year, maybe struggle a little, and then put it together later in the year and in the playoffs like the Chargers did last year. These are the kinds of things that might actually serve us well later if we can fight though them right now.

Honestly-I myself didn't buy all this "undefeated" hype. We're in the TOUGHEST division in all of football, right?

Last year, New England had that luxury of a cupcake schedule, which was why they went 16-0.

Update from DMN Blog:

Terence Newman will not play Sunday and the Pro Bowl cornerback could miss even more time.

Newman has been diagnosed with an abdominal strain, but his MRI results have been sent to Dr. William Meyers, who is considered the top sports hernia specialist, for further examination. A sports hernia involves a partial or complete tear of muscle from the pubic bone. If he needs surgery, then Newman could miss six weeks.

"Maybe what he needs is some extra time to be ready to go," Newman's agent, Ben Dogra said. "But surgery would be a last resort."
After missing almost all of training camp and the season opener because of a groin injury, Newman experienced added soreness in his abdomen last Friday and did not play against Cincinnati.

"It's been hurting me for awhile but I thought I could play through it," Newman said. "Last week it got worse so we did some more tests. I just want to get right so I can get back on the field."

Um, why didn't we realize this earlier? Do we actually have a medical staff? Or do we just guess on players injuries and if it doesn't get better we then give a full dianosis?

I think Newman is one of the top CBs in the league .

His age was always going to be an issue whenm you guys took him 5th overall . When he came in the league he was already 25 . A groin injury is big news for a CB. I am not saying he will never be 100% but Springs was hampered by a groin issue in 06, he played fantastically down the stretch in 07 but he is no longer the best CB on the team .

At the begining of the season we all heard about how great the Cowboys secondary will be but with the isuues around Pac-Man, the injury to Newman you are suddenly down to Henry, who might be at the point in his career where he should consider the move to FS, Jenkins who like most other CBs will need at least two years seasoning to work out where he is and a 5th round pick .

Newman should, if he is struggling be rested and either but him on IR (bad idea unless the roster space is absolutly needed) or just rule him out, let him have sugury come back in December .

The only problem with that is Dallas playing in December and January is historically not a pretty thing and at that time you could be fighting for third in the NFCE and quite probably the final wild card spot .

This has to be the year we show strong in January. Or else at best we are one and done again.
Newman is CRITICAL to our D against playoff caliber passing attacks. If the surgery is the best bet do it NOW so we have him for January and Playoffs.

I think this team with DeSean Jackson would be so explosive and high scoring that we wouldn't really care who is playing corner. It could be Randall Gay or Ellis Hobbes, you get my point.
