Linehan recalls his brief playing career with the Cowboys
Rams coach Scott Linehan will be stepping on the field at Texas Stadium for the first time this Sunday even though he was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent in 1987. Linehan, a quarterback out of Division I-AA Idaho, was cut by the Cowboys after failing a physical (shoulder injury) prior to training camp.
“I think they just slapped my face and I woke up,’’ Linehan said. “I never made it out of Thousand Oaks, to be honest with you. When I was with Dallas, I was with them during the offseason, during OTA (Organized Team Meetings) time. It wasn’t a real storied NFL career unfortunately.’’
California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif., was the site of the Cowboys’ training camp from 1963-89. “I lived across the street in some condos,’’ Linehan said. “There was a linebacker from Kansas State who was the biggest, meanest guy I had ever been around. I was scared to death of him. He was my roommate.’’ Linehan couldn’t remember of the name of his roommate, but a little research showed that Jeff Hurd was the only Kansas State linebacker who played for the Cowboys in 1987.
Linehan remembers how legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry took the time to meet with him when he cut him. “He met with me face-to-face when he cut me, and that made an impression on me,’’ Linehan said. “I said, ‘If I am ever in a position like that, I’m going to do the same thing.’’’ Linehan has met personally with every player that he’s cut during his two seasons as the Rams’ head coach.
-- Linehan said backup quarterback Gus Frerotte took a few extra snaps in practice the last two weeks with Marc Bulger suffering from broken ribs, but not many.
“If we had a younger backup, it would be different because you have to give them more snaps,’’ Linehan said.
-- Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will almost certainly return from a sprained ankle that kept him out of two games. Tinoisamoa has had two days of full participation in practice.
-- Right guard Richie Incognito got only limited work in practice for the second straight day, making it unlikely that he’ll play against the Cowboys. Linehan maintained that Incognito still had a chance of playing this Sunday. That seems like wishful thinking since Incognito has had a full workload in practice since suffering a high ankle sprain in the Rams’ second persuasion game.
-- Linehan said the Rams went with their white pants last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because he felt like the lighter color would help in the heat.
Linehan also admitted that he was hoping the uniform change might change the Rams’ luck. “We’re trying to find some kind of a Karma thing here,’’ Linehan said. “We’ll stick with it when we do.’’
