They switched to the number 50 because the letter "L" is not sexy and has a connotation of "loser." Also, you'd be surprised how many Americans do not know that the Roman numeral for 50 is "L." Put simply, it would confuse a lot of people.

Well - I have to admit. I have two college degrees and if my life depended on it I had no idea L was the Roman numeral 50.

I would prefer Super Bowl 50 with the L marketed as well. I don't want them to completely abandon the Roman numerals, it is iconic.
