NFC team reports: Camp work intensifies
SN correspondents
Magazine Exclusive

Each week, Sporting News correspondents provide insight and analysis on every NFL team. Here's a sample of what you'll find in the latest NFC team reports.

East Division
Dallas Cowboys
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is trying to get tight end Jason Witten even more involved in the offense, especially by having him stretch the defense down the middle of the field. Witten has too much speed for linebackers and too much size for safeties, so Garrett wants to take advantage by making him a big-play threat -- not just a possession receiver. Garrett knows how valuable Jay Novacek was to the offense and wants Witten to have a similar impact.

New York Giants
Kicker Lawrence Tynes will compete for a job with first-year pro Josh Huston. Tynes is the favorite because of his experience. He has decent leg strength and good accuracy, though he was erratic at times last season. Coaches probably don't want to leave kicking duties to the untested Huston, especially in Tom Coughlin's make-or-break season. But they are enamored with Huston's leg strength and accuracy in spring drills. Huston is recovering from an appendectomy, but when he returns he will face increased pressure. Tynes would likely have to struggle all summer for Huston to win the job.

Philadelphia Eagles
Look for the team to continue to emphasize the run. It did so last season after coach Andy Reid turned over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and had better run-pass balance. That helped the team's division title run. The offense will always lean toward the pass, especially with Donovan McNabb healthy, but more running plays are likely. Third-round pick Tony Hunt adds backfield depth behind starter Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter.

Washington Commanders Outside linebacker Marcus Washington is rounding into shape after left hip surgery. He is lifting to strengthen his hip and leg and probably will not go full speed until training camp. Just having Washington on the mend is a plus. Washington is the team's best all-around linebacker. He is a sure tackler, is capable in coverage and has speed and explosion to rush the passer. The bum hip hampered Washington last season but he never used it as an excuse. Washington gives the team more than physical ability, though. When healthy, he goes non-stop at all times. The defense missed his intensity last season.

Repost, though I don't mind it because I am glad we are trying to get the ball to Witten even more; However I don't agree with the article saying that Witten has too much speed for the linebackers.... Witten runs in the 4.7s right? That would be about the norm for Wils and MLBs I would think.
If Witten has any weaknesses in his game it would be his speed; but even saying that is streching it.

He seems to play faster then he times. But that's just me.

He shouldn't feel any heat from Kolb this year. But one still has to wonder if the E-gals drafting Kolb rattled him or shook his confidence any or bruised his psyche any. You wouldn't think so. But........

The thing about him is that he finds a way to get open regardless of his speed limitations; honestly I don't get it. But I love every minute of it.

Seriously though. Who gives a flying hoot? its the freakin offseason. Not everyone can get on here and see every single article. some people (like me) miss these things, and apperciate the effort he puts in.

For a bunch of people who couldn't name a cowboy news site, you guys are quick to call out reposts.

Agree with this perspective for the most part. However ...

With Brian Westbrook providing all manner of sprinkles in the featured role, no one could say the Eagles' running backs were plain vanilla in 2006. But, with the addition of Tony Hunt, the big, physical back who rushed for 1,386 yards as a Penn State senior, coach Andy Reid might be ready to again scoop out the touches in a flavorful variety.

Meaning, Westbrook and Hunt as a one-two punch on the ground.

Also, a 5-9, 245-pound power running back who is known as "Nasti Nate" was the Eagles' final selection of the 2007 NFL Draft. With the 236th overall pick in the seventh round, the Eagles zeroed in on the power running back that has the deft ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. In Hawaii's unique run-and-shoot offense, Ilaoa (pronounced ee-LOW-uhh) finished his college career as the school's all-time leading receiver among running back with 151 receptions and 1,694 yards. His 1,689 rushing yards was 10th in school history. While no NFL team may utilize Hawaii's offensive scheme, Ilaoa said that the Eagles use their running backs the same way Hawaii used theirs.

That said, I don't see these moves that acquired tow power backs as "the Eagles Offense will always lean more toward the pass." While I could be wrong, it appears to me that the Eagles have made moves to take their running game to the next higher level. I see depth in a Westbrook/Hunt and
Buckhalter/Ilaoa back field by committee offense. That opens up the field to major receiver options.

Teams with weak DLs and secondaries had better do something before the regular season starts.
