Here's how the 2006-07 NFC Pro Bowl roster looked for offensive tackles --

Starter -- Walter Jones
Starter -- Chris Samuels
Reserve -- Jammal Brown (injured)
First alternate -- Flozell Adams (replaced Brown)
Second alternate -- Leonard Davis
Third alternate -- Bryant McKinnie

OK, so some people might notice that Davis was the second alternate for the Pro Bowl (he was the second alternate the year before, too) and say that it's meaningless because the Pro Bowl is just a popularity contest. Maybe so, but with whom is Davis popular? The fans? Nope. Here are the results of the fan voting --

1. John Tait, 127,241
2. Flozell Adams, 118,648
3. Fred Miller, 105,340
4. Walter Jones, 104,995
5. Jon Runyan, 89,651

No. 6 in the fan voting likely was Orlando Pace, who was No. 1 early in the voting but got hurt, went on IR and eventually dropped out of the top five. With one week left in the voting, Pace still was fifth, ahead of Runyan and less than 5,000 votes behind Jones.

As you can see, after the coaches' votes (one-third of the total) and players' votes (one-third) were combined with the fan voting (one-third), the order changed completely. Jones moved up to first or second, Samuels vaulted to first or second, Brown jumped to third, Adams dropped to fourth, Davis moved up to fifth, McKinnie finished sixth, and both Bears (Tait and Miller) dropped out of the top six, as did Runyan.

So, it was the coaches and players who were responsible for Davis being the second alternate for the Pro Bowl. They obviously had Davis ranked ahead of Tait, Miller and Runyan, probably ahead of Adams and possibly ahead of McKinnie, as well.

That's interesting right there, he played better then most give him credit for.

But as it has been pointed out, this year was pretty weak for tackles in the NFC. I looked at the stats for Davis and he gave up 8 sacks; and more penalties then the Hotel did and he did not even have the excuse of coming back from an ACL.

Davis was also playing left tackle. He should have no problem playing RT or RG.

That's some impressive analytic talent, Adam. Well done!

During the Davis press conference, Jerry Jones went on and on about how Davis is a high quality, highly productive player. Sounds like Jerry Jones isn't alone in that thinking.

Good info. Evaluating individual offensive linemen is difficult for fans. it's good to know that coaches and players hold him in pretty good regard. I think coming home will do Davis some good and give him a fresh start.

Davis can be a passable LT. He might make a decent RT. Of course in our division we have the Giants and Eagles who have very good speed rushers on both ends, or LBS who can rush from the ends on both sides. Davis should not be expected to be able to handle those guys- he is just too big to move quickly enough.

No doubt. Good post. I'm all for this signing. I know Steinbach personally so obviously I would have preferred to see him instead. I can't say much on Davis because I haven't followed his career and who watches the Cardinals? Reading this does make me feel a little more comfortable.

Here's to signing Columbo...

Cheers

He is huge. He probably gets tired quicker than most. Those air-conditioned shoulder pads should help.

After the 2005 season, Cardinals fans were complaining that Davis should have been in the Pro Bowl (he was the second alternate). He allowed just four sacks and had only one holding penalty. He has had a problem with false starts at left tackle, but he never had more than two false starts in any season at right guard or right tackle.

Thanks for your research because some of these posters go off on a tangent.

Why didn't you talk Steinbach into coming here?

For shame.

How do you know him? That's cool. I really like him.

Thanks Adam....I hope this quiets some of the naysayers who seem to think they know more about a player from reading the internet than the coaches and company men who get paid to make the decisions....they should at least quiet down some of the criticism until they see him on the field.

Thanks Adam very informative post as usual.

And Now from the Cbz Pollyanna blog:

With Davis the talent is there and just the fact he's now a Cowboy will relight his jets. I'll bet a case of DrPepper on it. ;)
