The NFL competition committee has had lengthy discussions about reducing the preseason to three games, Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy said.

The Packers will play five preseason games this year because of its participation in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio and would be in favor of the change.

"That would probably be a little more practical, especially with all the emphasis on player safety," Mike McCarthy said. "Hell, they've cut back everything else. I wouldn't be surprised if they go to three games. Three games with a two-week bye week, with two weeks before the opener. That's just my opinion. Nobody's told me that. I'd be for it. I think it makes a lot of sense. Then you could be a little more aggressive in that third game. Just take the fourth one out."

Just do away with the offseason all together and have 2 full regular seasons throughout the year.

That's a good idea! Do it kind of like minor league baseball...split the season into halves with winners of each "half" getting into the post season, except that the NFL season would last all year. We might have to have a couple of months off for FA and the draft, though. I like it! :) (somehow doubt the players/coaches would, though :()

I'm a fan of this. I understand the injury risk and I would hope that they expand the rosters if this happens, but more (real) football is a good thing.

Agreed, I dislike buying a season ticket and paying the same for 2 meaningless pre-season games.

Ticket holders would say thank you, for sure. And there would be fewer injuries to start the season out with as well...win/win.

Don't they discuss this every offseason? Sure seems like it.

PS games mean money to owners so up til now it's been the NFLPA that has talked about reducing PS. It's also why they limited practice instead of shortening the PS which has resulted in much poorer football particularly early in the year.

Now that they have legal liability due to their indifference to their worker's safety they are scrambling.

2 preseason and an 18 game regular season is the way they do it here in Canada. But we don't want the NFL to copy the lowly CFL do we?

Nah, 18 game regular season is dead... NFLPA has already dug in and said it ain't happening. The NFL needed to get that in before the current safety/concussion crisis. Not gonna happen now. Players already feel abused with the current 16 game schedule and Thursday games for all.

They are going to have an excess salary problem soon. Teams are already 70m under the cap. The revenues keep rising and the teams still cut the mid level guys in favor of the rookies.

They should just expand the rosters. Just let the Practice Squad guys suit up along with the full 53 man roster. If they use a PS guy he gets added at full pay.

If they added a second Bye Week it would help the players last the season and add an extra TV week without adding extra games to the 16 game schedule. Thursday road teams would have a Bye the week before. The Super Bowl would be Presidents Weekend and Monday being a holiday would be awesome.

Wouldn't mind it. Football season would be longer as well and I think we all like that. BTW, they may need to seriously think about doing the second bye week. I think the last time they did it was in 1993, right?

you all know at some point in the near future, there's going to be two preseason games and a 18 game season

I think so too. If the league sweetens the pot the NFLPA will buy off on it. If the league doesn't give up enough revenue share the NFLPA will say it's unsafe.

Can't believe it, but it was added in 1990.

They talked about this on NFL radio the other day. Likely won't happen because half the owners would get 1 pre-season home games per year. Its an odd number. What they also discussed as alternative is pairing up teams to hold a scrimmage against another team in a team's training facility where they can charge for tickets. They can make up some of the lost revenue by charging a fee to the scrimmage, make the fans walk through the team's pro shop and buy concessions. They mentioned that the Commanders-Steelers scrimmage brings 25,000 people every year.

You have to remember these are very greedy owners who are looking to take more of your money, not give you any of it back.

I think bye weeks as they are dont help some teams.
They should have a bye week in week 8 for 1/2 of the teams, and in week 9 the other 1/2 get their bye.

That way they all get a mid season bye to rest up,and also teams would have the same # of games played
except for those 2 weeks.

then if they want a 2nd bye , do it same way in weeks 13 & 14.
that way all teams making playoffs get another rest.
