I'm sure his CBS contract will have a clause allowing him to return to the NFL if an opportunity arises.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he plays next year. The fly in ointment is that the Cowboys “released” him even though he retired. Maybe someone can explain this, but what reason could there be to just drop his rights? There was no difference cap wise between his retirement and his release. Apparently the Cowboys did this at Tony’s request. So any said “I’m retiring, but cold you release me too,so you don’t have any rights to me?”

If Romo has a change of heart and decides to play, Houston can get him easy as anything, offer him a one year deal with no large contract previously attached.

Something is fishy.

There were cap ramifications. By releasing him, they were able to designate him as a post June 1st cut, allowing them to spread his dead cap over 2 years, allowing them to save 14 million this year, as opposed to only 5.

Jerry has also always said he would "do right by Tony". I took that to mean allow him to be a FA, so if he chooses to return, he can choose his destination.

Click-bait media, as it pertains to Romo the player, is in its death throes right now. The mediots know the days of easy clicks are coming to an end and they'll have to find a new whipping boy of the NFL.

You don't get a gig with #1 team on CBS to eventually go and help a team in need of a QB. Sorry. Ain't buying it. These jobs don't come around often. If he was replacing John Lynch or some other 3rd stringer, then I could see it happening.

But no, Romo is done. He's got one of the top media jobs ever posted. He's done. Next!

Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems like they could have simply waited until June 2 to hand in Tony's retirement papers and the cap would have split between two years. Same outcome, but keeping his rights.
I agree that it's a "do right by Tony" situation, and now it's easy to return with no strings.

Aikman wanted to return with Miami. And Romo has way more game than Aikman had at the end.

He also strongly considered returning as an Eagle as well...

Something a lot of Cowboy fans black out.
