He also strongly considered returning as an Eagle as well...

Something a lot of Cowboy fans black out.
Romo isn't a trader like past Cowboys. He gave his mind, body and soul to this team. And the past couple weeks showed me a lot about this decade's Cowboys:angry:

For those who missed it:

A source close to Romo also told me "Tony is done. It's over. I can't say it's definite, but I don't believe we will ever see Tony on a football field again unless he's doing a broadcast."

interesting. Lets play along for moment. What would contract look like since Dallas would absorb current contract over next 2 years. Since Dallas holds his right I assume they feel another NFL team will poney up a draft pick and then I guess they work on new contract. Just guessing here.

He was released. He's a free agent.

If he sucks on TV he may sign with Cleveland just to save face.
Simms really kept the bar low for anyone with a working knowledge of football to come in and look decent. Worse case: Romo is not doing all that hot, they'll still give him a couple of years to get it turned around before they walk separate ways. At which case, he'll be 39-40 years old. You think teams have questions about his durability now? Woof....he's not even going to get a consideration by then.

Translation: They are still in denial because they blew their opportunity to trade for him.

I can't believe he retired either. Still had that fire. Maybe he thinks if the broadcaster gig doesn't work, he could come back next year and give it a go. Sounded like from a tweet I read that he was actually choosing between HOU and CBS and chose the latter. That would be shocking in and of itself.

I am not 100 percent convinced either he will stay retired, but listening to the press conference he seems content with his decision at the moment... I still believe if the perfect deal comes into play he will strongly to consider it....

Maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems like they could have simply waited until June 2 to hand in Tony's retirement papers and the cap would have split between two years. Same outcome, but keeping his rights.
I agree that it's a "do right by Tony" situation, and now it's easy to return with no strings.
You are correct. Romo would have owed the Cowboys 12.5M if he retired against their wishes.

He probably still has the fire, but his body can't keep up with his mind, he knows this. And this oppurtunity won't come again with CBS. He'll make $5M/year for as long as he wants in one of the most enviable positions in the sport, outside of playing. He'll never play again. CBS isn't stupid, they know he can, but I'm sure there are clauses that he must retire for good if he signs this deal, and they replace Simms. No change he plays again.

ok Dallas did it this way so Romo didn't have to pay back 10 million. He will not do that to Dallas and sign with another team. His relationship with Jones family is too strong. He recently took family trip with Jerry daughter.

I read an article earlier (damned if I didn't copy the link before losing the article) that said a lot of Romo's decision was based on his back issues and not knowing how his back would hold up to the hits. I was actually glad to see Romo at least acknowledging this. Stay retired Tony and go make a killing in broadcasting now.....

The only scenario I see he would come back is if a contending team loses its QB heading into the playoffs. This would afford Tony one more chance at a championship without subjecting himself to a full season of abuse. Short of that I don't think he comes back. Why give up a potential 20 year career making millions as the lead broadcaster on CBS vs a 1-2 year maximum contract playing without any guarantee that he would get another broadcast gig of that caliber after re-retiring.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he plays next year. The fly in ointment is that the Cowboys “released” him even though he retired. Maybe someone can explain this, but what reason could there be to just drop his rights? There was no difference cap wise between his retirement and his release. Apparently the Cowboys did this at Tony’s request. So any said “I’m retiring, but cold you release me too,so you don’t have any rights to me?”

If Romo has a change of heart and decides to play, Houston can get him easy as anything, offer him a one year deal with no large contract previously attached.

Something is fishy.
They released him so he didn't have to pay back 5 million in signing bonus. To me this looks like Jerry still has him as a backup and doesn't have to pay him unless he needs him.

I'm just glad Houston nor Denver gets anything. Romo retiring means nothing to me. Releasing him and signing elsewhere with no compensation was my issue.

When Tony gets that competitive itch, he'll scratch it out on the golf links not the gridiron. I'm sure we'll see him doing more Invitational Tourneys and such now that he's retired.

Are these the same NFL execs who aren't willing to give up a fifth-round pick for him?
