Anthony Spencer, the Cowboys' first-round pick is having a marvelous minicamp/OTA. This could mean everything ... or it could mean absolutely nothing. It's May, after all. Nobody's wearing pads, there's no contact (at least there's not supposed to be) and the speed of the game is a tad slower now than it will be in training camp and preseason.

Still, it's always good to hear positive reviews on the top draft pick, even under the circumstances:
In Thursday's voluntary workout, Spencer nearly had an interception of a pass in the flat from quarterback Matt Baker to fullback Deon Anderson. At the snap, his first read was on the tight end, but when Anderson went wide, Spencer followed.

"It's just knowing where you're supposed to be and reacting," said Spencer, who rarely dropped into coverage at Purdue. "I was mad I dropped it."
You don't need pads to know this is encouraging. Leading up to the draft, the concern was that Spencer, strictly a defensive end in college, would struggle in pass coverage.

Apparently, that's not an issue. And even if it is, Spencer's in the right place: 2005 first-rounder DeMarcus Ware made the same transition and he's now one of the league's best young players; Greg Ellis, a defensive end for his first eight seasons, made the switch last year and had some success before a season-ending injury.

Oh, and the Cowboys' new head coach, Wade Phillips, has a little experience in helping turn collegiate pass rushers into menacing 3-4 outside linebackers. Exhibit A: Shawne Merriman. The only issue is if Spencer can make enough progress between now and September to earn the starting job. Ellis is the incumbent, but he's coming off an Achilles injury and his place at the top of the depth chart can be described as tenuous at best. Whatever happens, if you're the Cowboys, this is a good problem to have.

The transition of starters from Ellis to Spencer will happen eventually. Ellis knew this as soon as he heard Spencer's name at #26. This writer seems to be a month late with that news.

I dont think Ellis is too worried, nor should he be. Ellis has to know he getting up there in age. Ellis must know its a young mans game. Ellis just got promoted to back up. Rest, be ready to come in and spell Spencer. Enjoy your millions. Ellis has earned the right to enjoy himself. Just wish hes shut up and accept the fact hes old and 2nd team now. Nothing wrong with that. If hes got a chip on his shoulder, get out there and prove your STILL better then Spencer. Else **** and back the man up. But whatever you do, lose the attitude man. Your better then that.

It's 3rd and 10. As a Cowboys fan I'd smile to see these 11 guys on the field ready to try and pressure the QB into a mistake.

Ellis.....Ratliff.....Hatcher
Spencer...Carpenter...Burnett...Ware
Newman...Williams...Hamlin...Henry

5, maybe 6 guys are coming to get the QB. The question is...which 5? Or is it 6?

Race to the QB. Make a wish.

Shame on me, but I continue to have a bad feeling about Ellis' Achilles injury. That's a good lineup, but I suspect Canty would be there instead of Ellis. IMO, he's faster than Ellis and could beat the blocker more quickly as a 3-4 defensive end.

I realize it was 2 years ago and pre-Achilles injury, but Ellis as the LDE in the 3-4 yielded more QB pressures and sacks that year than Canty has in his 2 years.

It is pretty clear after the last two years, he isn't better than that.

Good point, but it's also fair to say that Canty may have been held back somewhat in Zimmer's read-and-react defensive scheme. Still, it's good to have the number of options that we now have and let's not forget Spears. :crossed:

True, but Ellis was in that same system.

I was watching some 2005 games yesterday and I had forgotten how huge Ellis was. He must have been up to 290 or so. He looked downright fat.

That's a far cry from this guy:

He's gotta be down to the 250s (low 260s at most). So, I just don't see him playing 3-4 DE. I know they talked about him possibly playing tackle on the nickel line, but man, he would get abused if they decided to run on 3rd and 5.

On 3rd and long? Don't put so much emphasis on weight.

Charles Haley, ring a bell?

That's another thing, on 3rd and long we most likely won't be lining up in a 3-4. But when did Haley play 3-4 DE, even on 3rd and long?

Also aren't both Ware & Spencer in the 260s range? If Ellis down to that weight and rehab successful, he could be faster then ever & have a monster year in Phillips 34.

I've been saying this for 4 years, every team shows 4-3 looks and 3-4 looks, as well as Nickel, and Dime.

Yeah, a 4-3 under is a 3-4 look. But the "closed" end in a 4-3 under is typically the strong-side end. Haley played weak-side. And typically a closed end in a 4-3 under is much larger than 250-260. Usually they're the size of a 3-4 DE (i.e., 280+).

I will let the "expert" have the last word on the last discussion.

I am excited about seeing more from guys like like Ratliff, Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Burnett, and Carpenter. But my expectations for 3 guys are through the roof.

I believe Spencer, Ware, and Williams are huge keys to this season, and one guy whose contribution will be evident to the best football guys is Ken Hamlin. I believe you will see a different secondary this year. Davis can hit, but not like Hamlin.

Not since Woodson was here have we had a safety who could deliver hits like Williams can. Now, I'm not saying Hamlin can hit as hard as Roy. he can't. I am saying he will unload from time to time and he is going to be vocal. I really think where his presence will pay off though is preparation. He thrives on it. Truth be told I am looking for a similar impact that Thomas Everett brought to the Cowboys.

I like this defense and the depth it has.

I'm hoping that Hamlin's time here will rub off on Pat Watkins big time. And quick.
