BUSTER DAVIS AMONG 21 CARDINALS CUT by Michael David Smith
The Arizona Cardinals announced on their official web site that they have released linebacker Buster Davis, their third-round pick from Florida State.
It's a surprise move, as first-day picks almost always make the roster.
“(Buster) never really stepped up to what we needed,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “We said going in we would pick the best 53 for the football team and we made that clear. I had even spoken with Buster that his level of performance on the field was not quite what we had seen on the tape.”
The full list of Cardinals cut: quarterbacks Shane Boyd and Lang Campbell; linebackers David Holloway and Pago Togafau; center Scott Peters; tight end Alex Shor; running back Steve Baylark; guard Brian Johnson; safety Brandon Keeler; defensive tackle Jonathan Lewis; cornerbacks Michael Adams, Darrell Hunter and Justin Wyatt; tackles Elliot Vallejo, Qasim Mitchell and Brandon Gorin; fullback Roshon Vercher; and wide receivers Leron McCoy, Matt Trannon and Michael Spurlock.
TEXANS CUT ZABRANSKY, MCCARDELL, JOHNSON by Michael David Smith
Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced that the team released 20 players, including Jared Zabransky, the rookie quarterback from Boise State, and wide receivers Keenan McCardell and Bethel Johnson.
Zabransky was a sentimental favorite as one of the heroes of Boise State's shocking upset of Oklahoma in January, but he was always a long shot to make it in the NFL. McCardell's career may be over; he's 37 years old and isn't the same player he was in his prime. The speedy Johnson, who showed so much promise early in his career, also may have a hard time finding employment elsewhere.
The list of cuts that Kubiak read at a press conference: Drew Hodgdon, Mike Brisiel, Bethel Johnson, Jon Abbate, Jared Zabransky, Darius Walker, Brandon Frye, Keenan McCardell, Wali Lundy, David Anderson, Alfred Malone, DelJuan Robinson, Victor Degrate, Trent Bray, Brandon Mitchell, John Walker, Tyrone Poole, Dexter McCleon, Tim Bulman, and Chad Stanley.
That gets Houston down to 55 players, meaning two more will be released before 6 p.m. today.

SAINTS DUMP DHANI
A league source has advised us that the New Orleans Saints have terminated the contract of linebacker Dhani Jones.
Jones, who previously played with the Giants and the Eagles, signed with the Saints earlier in the summer.
The seven-year veteran will not be required to pass through waivers, and can sign right away with any other team.
Other players released by the Saints on Friday include tackle Ben Archibald, receiver Derrick Doyle, center Brian Ferentz, tight end Ronnie Ghent, DT Rodney Leisle, OT Rob Pettiti, DE Scott Scharff, and DT Brandon Villareal.

EAGLES ACCIDENTALLY LEAK CUTS?
Multiple readers, and apparently some Philly media, discovered on Friday afternoon that the Philadelphia Eagles inadvertently posted their final roster cuts on the team's official site, apparently via a page that transmits data to wireless devices. The cuts are due to be made by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Several readers have informed us that the players who appeared on the list, which has since been changed to this, were as follows:
RB Nate Ilaoa; FB Jason Davis; FB/LS Jeremy Cain; WR Jeremy Bloom; WR J.J. Outlaw; WR Michael Gasperson; WR Zac Collie; TE Lee Vickers; T Jonathan Palmer; C Jasper Harvey; G Jacob Hobbs; T Pat McCoy; DE Marques Murrell; DT Mauricio Lopez; DT Ian Scott; LB Akeem Jordan; LB Dedrick Roper; CB Dustin Fox; CB Nick Graham; S Marcus Paschal; S Erick Harris; and P Dirk Johnson.
We've separately learned that Bloom, a fifth-round draft pick who spent the 2006 season on IR, has indeed been cut (or at a minimum has been informed that he'll be cut).
In addition to the cuts, we have a feeling that someone there is gonna get fired.
