NFL game in London attracting fan interest NFL.com wire reports

LONDON (Feb. 7, 2007) -- The NFL's first regular-season game outside North America already looks like a big hit.
More than 500,000 tickets were requested by about 160,000 fans in the three days following the Feb. 2 official announcement, the NFL said.
The ticket request process ends Feb. 18, two months before tickets go on sale for the Oct. 28 game between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants at Wembley Stadium.
Wembley is expecting to seat between 85,000-90,000 for the game.
"Nearly all these requests have come from UK based fans," said Alistair Kirkwood, the managing director of NFL UK. "These figures do not take into account the allocation of tickets for Dolphins and Giants fans from the United States, so we anticipate a very quick sellout when tickets go on sale in early March."
On Sunday, more than 4,000 fans gathered in London to watch the Super Bowl at Super Bash, which is in its fourth year.

Strange...

I was stuck near London for the Eagles/Pats SB because my flight was cancelled and I had to stay an extra day. I watched the SB with 1 American guy on business and a group of Brits. We had to convince the Bar to change a Rugby game, which was just a repeat anyway. The Brits had 0 interest, and the cpl that watched the game with us couldn't understand a damn thing. It was tiring trying to explain a false start or a PI to these guys.

I wonder where all the interest is coming from.

Those fans might be British based but there's a lot of U.S. soldiers/airman still living in the U.K. along with Americans living/working there. Also don't forget there's a lot of American troops still living in Europe and they'd think nothing of travelling over to the U.K. to see a live American football game. Also I do think there are a lot of Brit fans who have become familiar with our game who also interested as well as those German fans who probably know more about American football then any other European nationals.

Any of you planning to go to this game, even if the wrong teams are in it? Just curious.

When Dolphins and Giants fans yell, "BLITZ!!!", I wonder if any older British spectators in their 70's & above are going to duck and run for cover?

Hos - if I can get a ticket I'll be there. I actually attended the first preseason game at Wembley, back in '83 I think. Cards vs Vikings. It would be kinda nice to do the first regular season as well. :)

probably the fact that the NFL is taking the game directly to them

:laugh2: Very good, though many of those folks were evacuated from London during the Blitz. So maybe not.

With so much demand, perhaps the NFL will do three games. Sat, Sun and MNF. :p:

I'm interested. I'm going to try to get one of my brokers to get me tickets.

But I wonder why the heck they chose Miami? I think they could have gotten a more exciting team from the AFC.

I really wish it were the Cowboys playing . . . .

I was speaking to my cousin who lives in Berlin, and a bunch of his colleagues are planning on making the trip to the UK as well to watch the game.

I think the game should go really well in terms of attendance.

I hope it becomes an annual thing in the UK. I don't think it's a great idea to do it one season, and then not do it the next. The NFL should try to build some continuity.
