The Mackey play was a legal play - the rule at the time stated that the ball couldn't be deflected from one offensive player to another player directly. On that play, the ball was tipped by Eddie Hinton, then deflected by Mel Renfro before Mackey caught it. Perfectly legal play.

I went by what Renfro said he insisted 2 offensive players touched the ball but on the replay you could see it was tipped by Hinton then deflected by Renfro into the hands of Mackey. It was an incredibly lucky play and my dad told me he knew after that play it wasn't going to be the Cowboys day.

There were 3 in the Packers game alone -_-

1. Murray's Fumble
2. The Fumble on the Kickoff that we were so close to recovering
3. Obviously, "The Catch"

To a young fan, another would be Patrick Crayton's drop in 2007 against the Giants in the playoffs

As for The Catch, I wouldn't have changed that play except for us intercepting the ball. I believe that was a third down play, and the 49ers would have gone for it if they hadn't converted on that play.

The play I would have changed in that game is the Drew Pearson catch. If the league still had break away jerseys or if the corner slips, Pearson scores and the Cowboys win because there was little time left in the game. And The Catch just becomes another meaningless TD in a game we win.

If he gets tackled from behind, we're still in field goal range.

Crayton's drop may have been more costly than the hesitated route because there's no assurances he would have made the catch there. Had he not dropped that pass he would have at the very least gotten the Cowboys into FG range. The drop resulted in a good punt return for the Giants and a big switch in momentum.

No doubt it was a very lucky play.

Renfro had insisted that he never touched the ball on the play. There's a very good reason why he didn't feel the ball - he had a numbness issue in his hand. After Kennedy was assassinated, while Renfro was at Oregon, he was so upset at what happened, he punched a mirror and severed a blood vessel. He ended up having nerve damage in his hand, and this issue actually caused him to drop to the second round of the 1964 draft.

That's interesting first time I've heard that.

I can't even watch it to this day.:(

It does not help it has been played over and over and over again for decades as part of the NFL's disclaimer piece during games. You would think that it was a last second throw, final Hail Mary to end the game. Not even close. I still blame that stiff D.D. Lewis for his lousy technique on the play.

Yeah that's second for me. But first is 94 NFC title. That Deion pass interference was blatant. We would have at least got the ball inside the 10 with 6 minutes left. No doubt in my mind that team would have self destructed if Dallas scored on that drive.

Even Steve Young came out after that game and said he felt like his team was tight and on fumes by that 4th quarter. Would have been fun to see how that would have played out. Oh well.

I'm convinced if Jimmy Johnson was the coach we would have won that game. I believe the sloppy play we showed in that game was a result of sloppy coaching that caught up with us. Jimmy's Cowboys teams were hardly ever sloppy.
