Interesting... even for a preseason trial it's sooner than I thought. I would still prefer they go in the direction of eliminating it or at least questioning its existence, but at least they are addressing the fact that it's an automatic play.

I like the idea. Almost, but not quite automatic. At least the networks would have something to hold interest during that long commercial break. Right now it is Touchdown, commercial break, extra point, commercial break, kickoff, commercial break. And it gets worse if the kickoff is returned for a TD.

Right now they are simply ways to know if you can get a quick cig. bathroom break, beer run to the fridge, etc. Great to give it some meaning and to justify kicker pay.

I suggested this when we first heard about it, make it a 42 yd kick.

Moving the kick back is the option that made the most sense, but I don't know how much we're going to learn from doing it in preseason only. As a coach, I'd be more interested in evaluating players than in winning games, so I'd have no incentive to reveal my best 2-point plays, and every incentive to use the longer PAT as an opportunity to look at my kickers. The league should probably just bite the bullet and make the change for the regular season.

If they're going to keep the extra point I'd like to see some options. 1 point from the 25, 2 points from 40, 3 points from 50 yards, like a 3 pointer in basketball. That would really bring some strategy into play if those options after a touchdown were available. Touchdown and a 3 pointer from 50 is a 10 point swing. Leaves the door open for teams to get back into a game quick if they're down...isn't that what the NFL wants? Close games, locked in viewership?

IMO, this is an attempt to make the PAT less of a sure thing so the two point conversion is used more frequently. They want the money players (QB, WR, RB) on the field as often as possible. Another two point option would not be a direction they want to go in here.

Can't argue that. Everyone wants to see the money players on the field. I guess you could mix up the options. 1 point from 25, 2 point conversion by the team or a 3 pointer from 50. Either that or eliminate the 1 point from 25 and just have your 2 point and 3 point options.

1 pt from 25 (42 yard kick) or 1 pt non kick from 1
2 pt from 37 (54 yard kick) or 2 pt non kick from 2.5
3 pt from 43 (60 yard kick) or 3 pt non kick from 10

I stated about a month ago that if the league feels the extra point is too boring, they should simply increase the distance. Back then, I felt 30 or 35 yards would create a compelling factor of making that function significantly less predictable. I'd still much prefer to see it being changed to more than 25 yards. An extra five measly yards probably won't make much, if any, difference to practically every NFL kicker. It's very probable an overwhelming percentage of them are capable of making that 25-yard kick with just about the same regularity as 20. Looks like we'll soon see how it goes with 25, though, even if it's ultimately just about as automatic as before. I can't help but wish they'd be a little bolder and make it at least 30 instead. Ah, well . . .

It's an extra 23 yards, not 5. The ball is being PLACED at the 25.

what is wrong with the xp that we need to change it? What is it holding the game back from?

its not a safety issue, its not a time issue. I really don't understand what the problem is.

I've never heard any "outcry" for years about the XP.

Maybe not years, but as soon as Belicheck mentioned it last year, it was only a matter of time before something was going to be put on the table about it.

This option makes sense..

It would certainly put more excitement into the game.

Two minute drive that results in a TD late in the game. Now they need the extra point to tie. A 42 yard FG is no gimme. Factor in possible weather conditions. Drama baby.

Drama sure but now you are messing with the history of the league. Think how different the history of this league would be if all PAT's were 42 yard field goals.

Just seems forced, change for the sake of change. I don't see it as necessary.

The game itself presents enough drama and emotion, the league and the tv networks have been doing their best to get in the way of that and create false drama for over a decade or so now.

the game needs to breathe a little and needs the league and the networks to back off.
