Forces of nature are going to impose themselves on opening weekend football...and cast a pall...whether we like it or not.

Irma looks to be the worst hurricane to ever come ashore our lands...and over a million people could lose their home. There will be fatalities as surely some will resist evacuation.

I'm anticipating the weekend with the weirdest mix of emotions ever.

Having lived through hurricanes, I am fearful for those people being affected. God bless them!

Irma likely won't be a cat 5 when it hits, so it won't be the most powerful.

I am in Fort Myers, FL and we are staying through the storm. We are hunkered down, ready to go into seclusion. Depending on the model you watch, we are directly in it's path. There was a shift East yesterday that made it look better for the West Coast of Florida, and then it turned today back toward the West a little bit so could go right up the middle of the state. The roads are so packed that it is taking 20 hours to get what would normally take less than 5. Staying here, we have gas, water, food, etc. If we leave, no way to know how soon we can come back and lack of gas to even get back is a big issue. And having lived through other storms and having worked on Hurricane Andrew relief, I know how bad the looters and just plain thieves can be when there is no one around to stop them. Someone tries to come into my house without my permission is going to be in for a rude welcome.

Good luck! I've always stayed put too. Last time I almost regretted it. ,probably should have left, my daughter was terrified. Luckily we got through it.

I'm not much of a religious person but my prayers will be with you. Be careful!

Wow didn't realize the hurricane was this big. Not good.

It has had wind speed over 170mph...and 50-80 feet off the ground...wind speed close to 200mph. The past few days it has stayed cat 5 with winds rivaling strongest hurricane or typhoon ever.

It may lose some punch as it crosses islands and such, moves north...but it's still a Mike Tyson storm.

It's going to be catastrophic and it might very well be the worst ever. Andrew is the standard in Florida in 1992 but this looks bigger and stronger. Also, Andrew came in just south of Miami through Homestead, if this comes into Miami/Ft. Lauderdale - it will dwarf Katrina in economic and maybe in loss of life too.

I was in Charlie, that was a Cat 4 and I will never forget the sound - you just think at any second the walls will collapse on you - it's really indescribable.

Good luck! Wish you the best.

Thanks man, I'm sure I'll be in for a bit of a rough ride, but I'll be fine. I'm more concerned with the people in the southern and coastal areas. This is going to be catastrophic to so many unless Irma takes an unlikely path.

Do you build safe rooms into the houses there? I know they don't do basements because they would likely flood out.
