What is the % of overtime games that are decided in the last 5 minutes anyway.

Why do we care?

Wonder how much longer till we get college OT at this rate.

Strange change. It's not like there was a huge outcry for this.

On the other than, my personal observations is when overtime get into the last 5 minutes, both teams turtle up and those games OFTEN end up in a tie anyway.

This is stupid. NFL really going down hill very quickly.
It's like walking into Goodell / Mara quicksand.

I don't quite get this move either, but this seems like an overreaction. On average, teams play one OT game per year, and very very few of those last longer than 10 minutes in OT.

In the last 4 years, 12 games have been won in OT with fewer than 5 minutes remaining. Two of those only went down below 5 minutes because the winning team let the clock run. Another few had teams holding onto TOs, or running a couple extra plays inside of FG range because they could. And one strange one would have ended with the other team winning under the new rule (the Chiefs were down a FG, and kicked two FGs in the final 5 minutes of OT). So we're talking about maybe one game a year that might end in a tie or a different result because of this rule.

Again, I don't understand what they're trying to achieve by this change, but it's really not a big deal.

Classic example of an answer looking for a problem. Stuff like that happens when idiots are in charge.

I was curious, so I took a look. The new OT rule went into effect on 2012; there have been 5 ties since then. Every one of them involved a missed FG try inside of 4 minutes (all but one had one inside of 3 minutes). Two ended with missed FGs inside of 20 seconds.

My favorite is the ARI-SEA game this past year, where ARI drove from their 25 to the SEA 6 and missed a 24-yard FG (with 3:26 remaining). Then SEA took over, drove to the ARI 10, and missed their own 28-yarder with 0:11 remaining.

I don't see much to suggest that teams turtle up in the last 5 minutes. Maybe in the last 2-3, but even then, we're talking about maybe 3 games in 5 years. There are a lot more games that are won in the last 5 minutes of OT than there are that end in ties.

They will say it's for player safety. Less time equals less plays equals less chance of getting hurt. But then promote more games, thursday games etc. Hypocrites.

Now the turteling (if there is such a word) will begin that much earlier.

My (personal observations) stand corrected. Thank you.
