This is stupid. NFL really going down hill very quickly.
It's like walking into Goodell / Mara quicksand.
I don't quite get this move either, but this seems like an overreaction. On average, teams play one OT game per year, and very very few of those last longer than 10 minutes in OT.Like more players will get hurt of a concussions in that extra 5 minutes....idiot NFL....
Classic example of an answer looking for a problem. Stuff like that happens when idiots are in charge.Strange change. It's not like there was a huge outcry for this.
On the other than, my personal observations is when overtime get into the last 5 minutes, both teams turtle up and those games OFTEN end up in a tie anyway.
I think 26.5% is what I readWhat is the % of overtime games that are decided in the last 5 minutes anyway.
Why do we care?
I was curious, so I took a look. The new OT rule went into effect on 2012; there have been 5 ties since then. Every one of them involved a missed FG try inside of 4 minutes (all but one had one inside of 3 minutes). Two ended with missed FGs inside of 20 seconds.Strange change. It's not like there was a huge outcry for this.

Now the turteling (if there is such a word) will begin that much earlier.Strange change. It's not like there was a huge outcry for this.

My favorite is the ARI-SEA game this past year, where ARI drove from their 25 to the SEA 6 and missed a 24-yard FG (with 3:26 remaining). Then SEA took over, drove to the ARI 10, and missed their own 28-yarder with 0:11 remaining.
I don't see much to suggest that teams turtle up in the last 5 minutes. Maybe in the last 2-3, but even then, we're talking about maybe 3 games in 5 years. There are a lot more games that are won in the last 5 minutes of OT than there are that end in ties.
