NFL Parity - Lots of Teams in Our Situation!

The NFL may be all about parity, but eventually some teams will separate from the pack, and I would love to see the Cowboys be one of those teams for a change.

Teams like New England, the Steelers, GB, even Seattle and Denver all manage to always be in the hunt. Heck Belichik found a way to win games with Matt Cassell, while we couldn't squeak out one win with the guy.

What is it that the Pats do that keeps them relevant every year that we are not doing? And I mean other than Brady and Belichick, the obvious. The Pats always seem to have a competitive D, enough to keep them in the game.

What are we constantly doing wrong?

Lopsided talent on the 53. Argument for best in the league up top, pretty terrible outside of it.

We're just too inconsistent in player evaluation. In the first round we've killed it. 2nd round is up in the air, but as of right now we're getting 0 production out of our last 5 2ND rounders. The rest of the draft we're about average.

And for all the talk about not giving out big contracts, we're still really, really bad at managing the cap, mainly because we're so averse to veterans. Wilcox is making almost 2 mill, Gachkar/Heath/Wilber, etc. Yeah, you need some depth and ST players but you gotta churn some of these guys.

Bad drafting out of the first round, over valuing depth. I like Heath as a ST guy and emergency player, and I like Barry for what he is, but having almost 9 mill locked up between those safeties and Gachkar is going to hurt you. That's a Mario Williams/Ayers and Darren Sharper money.

Just not enough talent through the roster from a multitude of things. Jerry just can't help himself. And with Dak looking like a success, he probably believes he's totally redeemed himself by finding a QB.

But there is a lot of parity, nature of the biz and FA nowadays.

The parity argument is a cop out. There are teams that are good every year (Patriots, Steelers, Bengals, Broncos, Packers, Panthers, Cardinals, Seahawks) because they built a good team or have a good system (except the Packers who seem to rely heavily on Rodgers). We have an elite O-line with a long future ahead of them. Outside of that, we rely on an aging and aching QB to lead our offense and an aging and aching LB to lead our defense. There's very little young talent on the team deserving of a second contract. Instead, we're stuck overpaying guys like T. Craw and Scandrick because "not bad is better than nothing." We've failed to build a good team in the short run or the long run, and we've failed to establish a system that wins in spite of our shortcomings.

Can't argue with that. It always seems like we are Reacting rather than being PROactive, ahead of the curve. This organization was very lucky to have an innovative HOF Coach like Tom Landry through the years. We were also lucky to have a shrewd drafter like Jimmy Johnson that was able to build Championship teams that were still competitive even after he left the Cowboys.

Wondering if lightning will strike a third time for this organization...doubt it happens while Jerry's ego and senility get in the way. Hope I am wrong.

10 teams in nfc are 1-1 and 1or 2 more after after phil game tonight.
So 12 of 16 teams could be 1-1 after 2 games.

only 2 teams in nfc at 2-0, if phil wins they would be 3rd team.
So only 2-3 teams in nfc have a better record than dallas.
Funny thing is 2 of them are nfc east teams !!!!!!!!!!!

AFC has more 2-0 teams but only 4.
They have less 1-1 teams 6

Whole nfc west is 1-1, dont remember seeing that before, usually 1 is 2-0 or 0-2
So they are all tied after 2 games!

The AFC actually has 5 2-0 teams. New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Houston, Denver.

I was not using it as an excuse i was showing a trend regarding this year in particular, because their are lots of good teams with issues! honestly the Packers and Seahawks have not looked great this year so far. if anyone was a fan of a different team with the exception of the steelers they would be complaining just like this board. I was pointing the fact out that at least have some positive things to look forward to as opposed to most of these teams that are actually struggling at full strength. Yes we have struggled for close to 20 years and i get the frustration but fact is things could always be worse. It is taking longer then usual to get back to the big dance and there are numerous reasons for it their is no one reason but the Cowboys have set this team on the right course. As a franchise we still have more to be happy about then every team except the steelers who have more titles then us!

Do you not think we are a team in the upper echelon of the league ?

I do
That's cool but upper echelon is a bit much. I guess it's how you define upper echelon. Are we in the top 10 teams in the NFL ( I don't think so). I think we might be in the top 18-20 teams.

I think we are inside the top 15 at full strength. We are young with good talent at skill positions on offense we just need to shore up the D which i believe they will do next draft, although i think they will take a Wr somewhere in the 2017 draft. I also think we are a dangerous team if we make the playoffs

by no means do i think we are top 5

Fair and reasonable. I can tell you're a little more optimistic than most, but you know what...that's a good thing too. Balances the forum out. Go Cowboys !

I just don't think I could agree that there's much to look forward to. We do have dominant and young O-line. That's not debatable. Now, they will get expensive (since 3 and maybe 4 of them will be the highest paid at their position) but it's a solid investment and great for the team. Outside of that, we may have lucked ourselves into a QB. Like I said, I'm not sure if we can anoint him as the next Peyton Manning, but he seems to have "it" and I think can lead this team with the right pieces around him. Problem is, I don't think we're anywhere close to having the right pieces. Our defense really have very little to look forward to. Our best player is 30 and has a career of injuries. Our best CB is turning 30 and not even that great. We added a FS who has a lot of talent but hasn't shown he'll be a dominant NFL player. Really, nobody on defense looks like they could be an All Pro or anywhere close in the next few years. Even if we sucked on defense but had a lot of young potential, I'd be okay with it. But we don't seem to have short term or long term talent on our defense. There's just not much to look forward to on defense and that affects the whole team.

IMO Boys should be 1-1. Should have beat the Giants and lost to the Skins so it all equals out.

The defense has 4 sacks and 2 interceptions and I hope that trend continues. However, they are giving up 4.8 yards a rush and that has to improve fast. Lee has 20 tackles already, so you can't say he's not hustling out there, but Hitchens has been average so far. However, the Durant signing is starting to pay dividends, but the Thornton signing seems like a waste of money and I'm starting to wonder did we really need him? I'm just hoping Lawrence and Tapper will make a difference when they get their chance in a few weeks. We need more pressure and it has to be consistent for 4 quarters.
