NFL QB Index, Week 7: Jordan Love, Caleb Williams make big leaps; Dak Prescott slides

Rank 12 -- Down 5 spots from last week -- Dak Prescott -- Dallas Cowboys · Year 9
2024 stats: 6 games | 63.4 pct | 1,602 pass yds | 7.2 ypa | 8 pass TD | 6 INT | 25 rush yds | 1 rush TD | 4 fumbles

The Cowboys offense has a lot of problems. While Prescott is not atop that list, his turnovers have become an issue in recent weeks. His interception thrown late in the first quarter against the Lions wasn't necessarily a bad decision as much as it was a great read and play by Brian Branch, who tracked Prescott's eyes and drifted back from his assignment to make a play on a ball tossed toward CeeDee Lamb in the end zone. That play, however, tells the story of the struggling Cowboys, who are having a hard time capitalizing on scoring opportunities, have zero run game to speak of and are constantly asking Prescott to bail them out. He tries to do so and makes mistakes, which digs them deeper into a hole. Their play design is uninspired, they lack weapons outside of Lamb and even when Prescott drops a dime on a receiver, they often fail to hold up their end of the bargain (SEE: Jalen Tolbert's drop of a pass he lost in the sun). Folks will pin most of this on Prescott, but it feels like he's playing with less than a full deck right now. Unfortunately, it's dragging him down, too.

I'd have to say this is a pretty accurate assessment. They are asking him to do more than he's capable of consistently. Dak can be a really strong qb, but he needs a run game and his guys need to hold up their end. Many will argue that means he's not worth the money. That may be, but as always the market dictates what these qbs get paid and the next one is usually the highest paid. What we should've done is built up this ground game and let Dak play a more balanced offense. It's no coincidence Romos best year was 2014 when he had a dominant run game.

Having both, playoff failures and contract extension coming a around at the same time is the worst thing that could have happened to Dak, Not saying that's the reason, or offering it as an excuse, but the pressure to change one, and live up to the other is immense. This pressure will either crush him, or yield the value we've all been waiting on.

Jerry must already be rueing the day he extended Dak. No wonder he’s going bonkers lately. The idiot really outdid himself this time. He signed on for an additional four years of futility to his 82 year old arse. Wonder if he’ll still be around. As for Dak, the greatest bank heist west side of the Mississippi and south of the Red River.

Looks like Mayfield and Smith are blowing this whole "market rate" BS into smithereens.
