I think one reason is over-exposure.

There are just too many games on now.

Back in the 80's & 90's, Monday Night Football was an event.

Now it's just another game between two boring teams.

And then you have the shear number of commercials and all the promotion stuff done by the commentators.

I just think folks have tapped out.

People still seem as interested in football as ever - at least at my workplace and neighborhood.

I see the article is using prime time games - maybe people don't stay up as late anymore ?

I think for some demographics and age groups it's still high. Generation X & Boomers... Medium to higher incomes.

I think for others... minimal interest.

I think there may be something to this. Adding in that you have Thursday night games and Sunday night games then college games Friday night and all day Saturday -Saturday night.

However the article did mention it was down compared to last year and that was the same situation as last year

Millennials! These young guys don't like sport(I have heard them use that term) and would rather go on hikes to lavender farms and sketch on a park bench :lmao:

Seriously though, I wonder if election year has something to do with the ratings. This isn't a normal, boring cycle but an electric one where everyone has an opinion on both sides.

Not to mention, MNF has lost its pizzazz and the commercials seems to have doubled over the last few years. Add in streaming, bootlegging, etc.

It is probably a combination of all of the above.

they did let Mike Tirico go for Monday night football. I really liked the combination of he and Gruden. Those two were pretty electric and entertaining.

I know some here have bashed Gruden. Meh, to each his own. I really enjoy Grudens commentary and the energy he brings. Though it doesn't feel the same this year without Mike.

The nfl running with the fantasy stats all the time makes me want to turn it off. I think a lot of people have gotten to where they care more about their fantasy teams than sitting through three hours of commercials and ridiculous overturns of obvious catches even with instant replay

I also think people trying to cut the cord have given up on being raped by directv and will find the game elsewhere. I know I do.

Hard for me to buy that one. Everyone I know watches more than ever before because there are more games on now.

Also...Put better games on and people will watch. Especially prime time games. And stop scheduling teams for back to back prime times games. That happens a lot.

I know a lot of guys that play fantasy and couldn't care less about actually watching the games, they just want stat updates on their phones. It's really strange to me.

I agree with the points made in this thread, the NFL is way too overexposed, too many games between boring teams, etc. The flex schedule NBC uses for it's Sunday Night games needs to be more broadly adopted by the other networks.

But's let's also realize for many years the NFL's ratings did nothing but climb. Eventually it was going to reach a saturation point and then start going down.

Too many spares covering football. That good morning football show for example makes me dry heave. Why does it come on like a C rated sitcom? Also, I am not trying to hear from couch potatoes talking about fantasy football. Fantasy football coverage is on more than actual football. ED ads are terrible too and hypocritical. Explaining what ED is to a curious 7 year old bites. Football suppose to be family oriented entertainment. Don't get me started on all of the commercials, it is entirely too many. One more thing, there is a whole segment of teams that I could care less about and it pisses me off when they air one them in lieu of the Cowboys. A la carte programming at a more reasonable price compared to DirecTV would boost ratings.
