As much power as they have over games, and how often they *** up, NFL refs need to be made full time employees of the league. They should get paid as such, but should also be held accountable as such. If a ref blows a call as obvious as yesterday's Indy/Pitt game, they should be fired. If they do a very good job over several years, give them a raise. Give them incentive to make the right call, everytime. Also, as a full time employee, they could undergo much more extensive training and would be much more knowledgeable of the game..

I agree with most of what you are saying, but being fired over 1 call. No way. They are graded after every game. Set a standard on what grade must be maintained to keep their jobs. Part of the incentive is to be good enough to officiate in the playoffs and the Superbowl. Blow too many calls and they don't get that privledge.

If Nick Harper's wife hadnt gone Michael Myers on his Kneecap, that call would have cost Pittsburgh the game. A playoff game, no less. Someone should at least be fined over it.

Do you fine a receiver for dropping an easy TD or the QB for overthrowing an easy one? Incentives for doing a very good job sounds like a good idea, but I don't see the point of fining someone for making a bad call.

Before you make blanket statements about the training the NFL gives it's refs, and what they are or aren't held "accountable" for, you might wanna look into what the facts are.

BTW, just what is it, these "full-time" employees are supposed to be doing the 6+ months there is no football?

Those 6 months become a great vacation package for the top officials.
They could run seminars and work shops.

The league really needs to hold aa conference of refs, owners, general managers, coaches and player reps to look at every rule on the books and dissect how the rules apply and should be interpreted. There is a lot of stuff out there and some of it needs clarification.

I think they do a pretty good job all-in-all identifying problems when they arise, and correcting them to the best of human ability fairly quickly.

Not sure what refs get paid but thought I heard it was around $70,000. While some of these guys may be retired, I understand most of them held full or part time jobs elsewhere. Assume NFL pays their way to the games; does anyone know for sure?

Part time or full time shouldn't make a difference. Fire the refs who screw up, regardless of how much they make. There is apparently enough interest in the job to keep a steady stream of applicants.

Agreed on everything, except them being fired after 1 bad call!!!

I would give them 8 strikes(4 leading up to mid-season, 4 after midseason).
If they **** up 8 calls at anytime during the season, whether its game 5 or game 16, they should be fired!!!!!!
