Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who was offered what is believed to be just a two-year deal from Baltimore, had his agent, Mitch Frankel, trying to secure a visit to several teams, including Denver. Lewis is expected at the Dove Valley Complex today. Lewis has had reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in both knees, has had ankle surgery and has been suspended twice under the league's substance-abuse policy.

If the gap isn't bridged, Drew Brees likely will be heading back to New Orleans, and the Dolphins will fall back to what is clearly their second option: Somehow acquiring Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Culpepper, who Nick Saban talked to by phone during the weekend, is available because he requested a trade out of Minnesota citing irreconcilable differences with the club. He could also be released before Thursday.

The agent for free-agent kicker Mike Vanderjagt has talked to the Packers and thinks they're interested. "I would say a little bit, yeah," agent Gil Scott said Sunday. "I talked to (negotiator) Andrew Brandt Saturday." After eight seasons in Indianapolis, Colts President Bill Polian let Vanderjagt's contract expire and said he wouldn't re-sign him. Vanderjagt has made 217 of 248 field-goal attempts for 87.5%, making him easily the most accurate kicker in history.

The Broncos still are interested in Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens, who must be traded or cut by the close of business Wednesday.

The Texans targeted David Givens, the Humble native who earned two Super Bowl rings in his four seasons with New England, as the offensive player they wanted the most. Givens, 25, was offered $18.5 million over five years, but he is going to Nashville, Tenn., today to meet with the Titans. If Tennessee comes close to meeting his asking price of almost $25 million over five years, the Titans will have the best chance of signing him.

A league source said veteran Saints defensive end Darren Howard agreed to a six-year deal with the Eagles late last night after spending the day in Philadelphia. Details, other than the length of the contract, were not immediately available. Gary Wichard, the agent for Howard, would not confirm the agreement but said he was working on a deal with the team.

Bears officials immediately shifted focus to Eddie Drummond. In four seasons with Detroit, the 5-foot-9-inch, 190-pound Drummond has returned two kicks and four punts for touchdowns and averaged 24.4 and 9.5 yards, respectively, on kickoffs and punts. If Drummond isn't signed, former Packer Antonio Chatman is a possibility, as are Tim Dwight and Az-Zahir Hakim, who played for St. Louis when Lovie Smith coached there.

Even as the Dolphins agreed to terms with defensive players Sedrick Hodge and Andre' Goodman on Sunday, they were negotiating feverishly with left tackle L.J. Shelton while also treating Brees to some sights around South Florida. Regardless which quarterback the Dolphins sign, it seems they have focused on the left tackle they want to protect that quarterback. Shelton, 6-6 and 345 pounds, visited the Dolphins on Sunday, and the team immediately opened contract negotiations with his agent, according to two NFL sources.

John Abraham, a top pass rusher who is being shopped by the New York Jets, was scheduled to have dinner with Commanders coaches and team officials last night, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

According to a source, the Commanders are preparing to offer Rams free agent safety Adam Archuleta a multiyear contract worth $3.5 million annually. Archuleta is considered a possible target of the Patriots.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Green Bay Packers want Cleveland Browns linebacker Ben Taylor in for a visit but have delayed it a week so key members of their scouting department can attend timing days for draft-eligible players.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

If Ryan Longwell’s worth $2 million a season with a $3 million signing bonus, then Adam Vinatieri would seem to be looking at something between $2.5 million and $3 million annually. According to league sources, only three teams in the market for a kicker can afford that price tag: the Patriots, Dallas Cowboys and Green Packers. “They’re basically a love triangle right now, and they’ve all got something going for them,” said an agent representing a free agent kicker not named Vinatieri. “The best cap situation is Green Bay. The best personal situation would be New England. And the best kicking conditions are in Dallas.”
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

New York Jets defensive end John Abraham, who is at the top of the Broncos' list, is scheduled to visit the Broncos this week. While neither Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist nor coach Mike Shanahan returned calls Sunday, Abraham was believed to have lined up visits in the coming days to Denver, Seattle, Cleveland and Atlanta as his agent, Tony Agnone, tries to find a trade partner for the Jets' three-time Pro Bowl selection.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Quarterback Jon Kitna and defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen arrived in New York late yesterday and will visit with Jets officials today at Weeb Ewbank Hall, where the club is expected to put on the hard sell, especially to Kitna. ... Kitna, 33, is atop the Jets' wish list as the player to compete with Chad Pennington for the starting job. Kitna's agent, Mike Moye, confirmed yesterday that Kitna visited the Lions on Saturday and was en route to New York.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Daunte Culpepper is waiting for Brees, and the Dolphins to make their decision before he continues his efforts to leave Minnesota. According to several sources, Culpepper told the Tennessee Titans he did not wish to be traded there at this time but left open the possibility later. It was no coincidence that the Titans on Saturday dropped out of the running to trade with Minnesota. The Oakland Raiders and Dolphins are the only teams talking to Minnesota.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Giants will host three more players today. Cornerback R.W. McQuarters (Lions) and safeties Will Demps (Ravens) and Quentin Harris (Cardinals) were scheduled to arrive last night and receive physicals today. McQuarters, Demps and Harris are the team's targets for added depth in the secondary.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Looking for a new punt returner, the Jaguars entertained veteran free agent Tim Dwight over the weekend but have not yet signed him.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Miami and Minnesota have shown interest in former Green Bay linebacker Na'il Diggs.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Cleveland is also working to get former Detroit defensive end Kalimba Edwards signed by today, Browns General Manager Phil Savage confirmed. "Obviously we're in it," Savage said of the Edwards negotiations. "I can't say for sure if he's coming or not, but we're hopeful." Edwards was in Cleveland Saturday and Sunday.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Cornerback Will Allen, a former No. 1 pick who has played for the Giants the past five seasons, was in Seattle over the weekend. Kansas City was next on Allen's traveling agenda.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

One thing that isn’t clear is whether Edgerrin James will participate in any of the Cardinals’ voluntary spring and early summer workouts. He was usually a no-show for voluntary off-season workouts in Indianapolis. His four-year contract with Arizona, however, does not include workout bonuses.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Steelers QB Charlie Batch, who became an unrestricted free agent Saturday, is expected to sign a contract today for three or four years to return as Ben Roethlisberger's backup.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Todd Collins, 34, would provide needed Commanders insurance at quarterback. The veteran worked with Al Saunders, associate head coach-offense, in Kansas City, and is comfortable in this offense. Jason Campbell, a first-round pick last spring, is the only backup to starting quarterback Mark Brunell at this point. Collins's agent, Brad Blank, said negotiations with the Commanders were ongoing.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Washington still has veteran wide receivers David Patten, a key free agent signing a year ago who was injured for much of 2005, James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs, although they might not all be Commanders by next season.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Cardinals RB Edgerrin James will actually earn more over four years than Seattle running back Shaun Alexander, who’ll pocket $28.562 million after signing a new contract with the NFC champions last week. In fact, the James deal only trails the contract of San Diego’s LaDanian Tomlinson by $250,000 over the first four years.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

It appeared Sunday night that a trade of quarterback Daunte Culpepper was still on hold until Chargers free-agent quarterback Drew Brees determines where he wants to play first.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Jamal Lewis' agent, Mitch Frankel, had been negotiating with the Ravens yesterday and indicated the sides weren't "that far apart." Frankel was still expecting a call back from the Ravens last night when told of Mike Anderson's deal with the team. Lewis said last night that he had been taking a serious look at returning to the Ravens. The franchise's all-time leading rusher, Lewis is scheduled to visit the Broncos today but didn't rule out the Ravens even with Anderson there. "I don't know," Lewis said of the Ravens' situation. "We'll have to take a look and see."
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Colts old consists of incumbent backup Dominic Rhodes and James Mungro, who's an unrestricted free agent who might be re-signed. The new likely involves a player selected in the April 29 draft. "We'll find capable people,'' Dungy said. "It looks like it's going to be a good year for backs in the draft.'' At least four running backs are considered first-round prospects: USC's Reggie Bush and LenDale White, Memphis' DeAngelo Williams and Laurence Maroney of Minnesota. Other possibilities are Wisconsin's Brian Calhoun and Joseph Addai of LSU.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Giants met with free-agent linebacker LaVar Arrington this weekend as scheduled. The former Commander arrived on Saturday and had several meetings with coaches and members of the front office as well as taking a physical. His agent, Carl Poston, said late yesterday afternoon that the two sides had yet to begin contract discussions. Poston wasn't certain if Arrington was going to leave last night or early today because he hadn't yet spoken to his client. He was waiting to get a full report from Arrington before deciding to talk numbers with the Giants. Poston said eight other teams are interested in the 27-year-old, but Arrington has not scheduled any more visits. The Dolphins are the only other team he has met with thus far.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Vikings entertained Packers quarterback Craig Nall and made plans to visit with fullback William Henderson later in the week.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Steelers had expected Antwann Randle El to leave and will give Cedrick Wilson the first chance to replace him. By midseason, Wilson and Randle El split time as the No. 2 receiver. Steelers coaches also like the prospects for Nate Washington, an undrafted rookie last season. "We have a good group of guys," offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said. "We'll figure something out.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Bears could also factor into the future of veteran quarterback Brian Griese, released by Tampa Bay on Friday. Chicago is shopping for a veteran to back up Rex Grossman and the Bears are interested in Griese and former Cardinal Josh McCown. The Lions, coached by former Bucs assistant Rod Marinelli, also could be a destination for Griese, who is coming off knee surgery.

The Bucs were busy exploring the protection racket Sunday as former Patriots tackle Tom Ashworth visited with the coaching staff before departing for his next free agency tour stop in Miami. Ashworth, 28, squeezed in a meeting with the Bucs in between visits with the Jets and Dolphins.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Andre Carter, the first defensive lineman targeted by the Commanders, left town without a contract yesterday. Carter is drawing strong interest from Denver, and was expected to visit the Broncos after departing Washington. As he left Commanders Park yesterday, he was accompanied to his limo by defensive coordinator Greg Blache, who wished him well before adding, "We hope to see you back here."
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Steve Baker, the agent for quarterback Jeff Garcia, said his client has received interest from several teams and his primary focus is going to a team that has a chance of winning. He said Garcia may plan a trip in the next couple of days, but he would not confirm that the Eagles are among the teams most interested in the quarterback.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Along the offensive line, the Eagles are still discussing the idea of re-signing right tackle Jon Runyan, who had a visit of his own scheduled for this morning. "I'm leaving the country," he said. "But my flight connects in Charlotte, so maybe people will be talking about me going" to the Carolina Panthers.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Dolphins apparently didn't think they had a great fit with New England receiver David Givens. He left town Sunday and flew to Houston. Today he is expected to visit Tennessee. During his time in South Florida, Givens joined coach Nick Saban and Mueller for dinner but never got a contract offer. The Dolphins have more visits scheduled for today.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Saints also brought in free-agent linebacker Scott Fujita for a two-day visit Sunday. The Saints also discussed bringing in free-agent quarterback Josh McCown as early as today.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Rams still have a five-year offer on the table for defensive tackle Ryan Pickett. Pickett visited Green Bay on Sunday and may visit Buffalo.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Patriots may not be out of the running for wide receiver David Givens after all. The team and agent Brad Blank have spoken the last two days and discussed the general parameters of a contract that would keep Givens in New England, though they’ve yet to exchange detailed proposals. “They’re certainly interested,” Blank said. “They’ve always got a chance. They’re the team that drafted him.”
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Ken Harris represents free agent Paul Edinger, a potential replacement for Adam Vinatieri, since he kicked well outdoors in Chicago for five years before moving to Minnesota last season. The Patriots and Harris have spoken, but tellingly, the team did not initiate contact with the kicker.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

The Browns might be shopping center Jeff Faine now that they have Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley. A league source said the Browns called about five or six teams last week to assess Faine's market value. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported one of those teams was the Eagles, who lost to the Browns in the Bentley sweepstakes. The Eagles are not believed to be interested in Faine (6-3, 291 pounds), who is recovering from a torn biceps. Before the Browns officially put Faine, their 2003 first-round pick, on the trading block, they'll notify his agents -- and as of Sunday, that hadn't happened yet.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Next week, former Denver tight end Jeb Putzier will visit Houston. Texans coach Gary Kubiak is hoping to sign him, too.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

A league official said the Giants have spoken to the agent for defensive tackles Sam Adams and Grady Jackson -- both of whom played in Oakland when Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle was a member of the Raiders' coaching staff.
»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Reserve cornerback Torrie Cox, a restricted free agent who didn't receive a tender offer from the Bucs, could be headed to Chicago. Cox was third on the club with 19 special-teams tackles last fall.

Thanks for the post! Will be interesting to see what ends up happening in the Brees-Culpepper saga. Guess Brees is headed to NO, Culpepper to the fins and the Vikings are going to be lead by Brad Johnson....

Yeah, but 95% of this board (including me) would let out a HUGE sigh of relief if we signed a vet kicker....

>>>The Broncos still are interested in Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens, who must be traded or cut by the close of business Wednesday<<<

I heard some speculation on one of the radio talk shows that the Eagles might pay Owens the bonus he is due Wednesday, and then trade him...apparently nobody wants to trade for him now because of his current contract, but if the Eagles pay the bonus then teams would theoretically be more willing to part with a mid to late rd pick for him

obviously Philly has a ton of cap room and would 1) at least get something for him and 2) he could go to Dallas

just food for thought for people that think it might be a done deal for him to come here

Except Fujita was mentioned going to New Orleans for a visit First time I've seen his name linked to another team. Surely there is more to the story about him leaving than this little blurb

His former position coach is the defensive coordinator in NO.
