While it seems highly unlikely the Pats would pursue a player as divisive and highly paid as Terrell Owens, Keyshawn Johnson makes a lot of sense. The 6-foot-4, 214-pounder’s style of play very much fits the Patriots mold - big, strong, tough and willing to block in the running game. He would provide an excellent complement to the smaller, speedier Branch. Jerome Stanley, Johnson’s agent, did not return calls seeking comment.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Ravens are still shopping around middle linebacker Ray Lewis as trade bait, possibly to the Denver Broncos for one of their two offensive tackles, Matt Lepsis or George Foster.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

With an eye toward improving the safety position, the Falcons have made a three-year contract offer to hard-hitting strong safety Lawyer Milloy, who visited the team's facilities in Flowery Branch on Monday, according to his agent. "We are looking over things," said Carl Poston, Milloy's Houston-based agent. "He had a great interview and he loved it. We just have to try to look at all of the options and see what's best for him."
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

How are the Eagles going to replace Terrell Owens? It's possible that Green Bay's Javon Walker and Buffalo's Eric Moulds could become available in a trade because they are in contract disputes with their current teams. If the Eagles keep the status quo at the receiver position, they'd go into the season with Reggie Brown as the No. 1 target and either Todd Pinkston or Greg Lewis as the No. 2 guy. The other veteran receiver on the roster is Billy McMullen.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Former Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown arrived in Alameda on Tuesday night for a look, further squelching rumors that the Raiders are still negotiating with Kerry Collins. Collins, 33, was waived last week to rid the team of his $9.2 million cap hit. The Raiders apparently have no interest in re-signing him; there has been no dialogue between the team and Collins' agent, David Dunn, since Collins was cut loose.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said the Chiefs had no plans to meet with Terrell Owens. “We haven’t had that conversation,” Edwards said. “We haven’t talked about it. We don’t know what that situation is, so we’ll just have to see. “We haven’t talked to his people since the Senior Bowl (in January). Nothing has transpired since that. We’re open to listening to everybody. That’s what you have to be able to do in free-agency. You have to be a good listener.”
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Jets and Falcons are engaged in trade talks, and the Jets are offering disgruntled defensive end John Abraham, the person said. The Falcons want Abraham and appear willing to meet his huge contract demands, but they're not willing to include Matt Schaub in the package, ESPN reported. That could be a deal-breaker. The Falcons have two attractive commodities — Schaub and their first-round pick (No.15) — and it's hard to imagine the Jets settling for a deal that doesn't include one of those. The Jets probably would take Schaub and a second-round pick for Abraham
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Team officials had been telling reporters covering the Cowboys that they didn't envision signing T.O.; yesterday, those reporters were told there was no connection between axing Keyshawn and adding T.O., but apparently, no one flat-out said an Terrell Owens signing couldn't happen. Drew Rosenhaus met with Dallas coach Bill Parcells at the NFL scouting combine last month.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

An NFL source said Tuesday night that the Packers plan on bringing New England Patriots free agent kicker Adam Vinatieri in for a visit on Friday. Vinatieri, widely considered the best clutch kicker in the game after making last-minute kicks to win Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII, figures to command even more than the five-year, $10 million ($3 million signing bonus) contract Ryan Longwell signed with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this week. Vinatieri was tagged as a franchise player by the Patriots each of the past two offseasons, but the team opted not to use the tag on him again this year. While the Patriots want him back, the prevailing thought is that he will sign elsewhere - though the Packers' interest comes as a mild surprise. Packers general manager Ted Thompson was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Dolphins contacted the agent for free agent quarterback Tommy Maddox, who could take the backup role if Gus Frerotte doesn't re-sign.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Will the Broncos dare to become T.O.'s next employer? "I don't know what our position is with Terrell Owens," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said. "I'm sure there will be a lot more interest in him around the league now that he's a free agent. But as for us, I'm not sure."
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Some people think the Vikings might be able to take the No. 51 pick from Miami, their own No. 17 and No. 48 overall picks, plus trade a player or two (perhaps Jim Kleinsasser and/or Nate Burleson), to New Orleans for the Saints' No. 2 overall pick. With the No. 2 pick, the Vikings probably would have their choice of quarterbacks: Matt Leinart of Southern California, Vince Young of Texas or Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt. Each of them would command a signing bonus of at least $20 million.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Gus Frerotte. Frerotte, who still has a home in the Denver area from his time with the Broncos, has told his agent, Marvin Demoff, he would like to play in Denver or St. Louis. The Rams are coached by Scott Linehan, who was Frerotte's offensive coordinator in Minnesota and Miami. Frerotte turned away an offer from the Broncos last year to stay in Miami to work with Linehan. ‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Defensive end John Abraham arrived in Seattle on Tuesday night and will visit Seahawks headquarters today.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Vinny Cerrato, Commanders vice president of football operations, has contacted the agent for free agent linebacker Sam Cowart, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Cowart, an eight-year veteran, played middle linebacker in Buffalo under Gregg Williams, assistant head coach-defense, and is familiar with the system. Cowart wants to continue to play middle linebacker, according to his agent, Paul Healy, and has visits scheduled for next week but not to Washington.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

A source said the Browns have begun to feel out what it would take to sign Julian Peterson, a free agent outside linebacker who was the 49ers' franchise player two straight years. Peterson made 82 tackles last season after just 27 in 2004 when an Achilles injury ended his season after five games.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Commanders are believed to be pursuing San Diego cornerback Jamar Fletcher for their vacant nickel back spot. Fletcher, 26, is a former first-round pick of Miami who had one sack and one interception last year.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay scoffed at suggestions of becoming NFL commissioner in light of reports that Paul Tagliabue could be stepping down before his contract expires in two years. "I struggle enough to keep my present day job to worry about another job," said McKay, hired by team owner Arthur Blank to run the Falcons in 2003. "I don't really have any answer to that." For years McKay has been mentioned as a possible successor to Tagliabue. "Since I was five years old I've been hearing that," McKay said.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Two NFC personnel executives said the Broncos have been shopping their two first-round picks in April's draft in exchange for early picks in the 2007 draft.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Saints made it happen by showing Drew Brees the love -- and the money -- outbidding all other teams for his services. The Saints will owe Brees another $12 million bonus next March if they want to keep him on the roster, according to sources. "Really, what it came down to was who I felt like believed in me the most," Brees told the Times-Picayune on Tuesday night. "I really got a great feeling from the Saints organization and the head coach. And I really felt like I have the opportunity to do something great here. "The Saints have made it clear from the beginning that I'm their guy they want to build this thing with, and that's really exciting." A source told the Sun-Sentinel that Brees' shoulder was "much worse" than the Dolphins thought after he was examined by the team's medical staff. But the Saints did not have such concerns after their own evaluation.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper, traded by the Vikings to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, will be in downtown Minneapolis next week for a Hennepin County motions hearing. Culpepper's attorney, Earl Gray from St. Paul, is seeking dismissal of lewd conduct charges stemming from the Lake Minnetonka boat party in October. If Culpepper were not to appear at the hearing at 9 a.m. next Wednesday, a warrant for his arrest could be issued. "Now that (prosecuting attorney Steven) Mr. Tallen has driven Mr. Culpepper out of town with his frivolous charge, maybe he'll own up and dismiss the case since it never should have been charged," Gray said Tuesday.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Contract issues could have an impact on Joey Harrington's future with the Lions. He has two years left on the original six-year contract he signed in 2002, when the Lions drafted him in the first round. A roster bonus payment of $4 million is due June 15, and his base salaries are $4.45 million for each of the next two years. The base salaries are not guaranteed. Without a renegotiation, Harrington's salary-cap number for 2006 will be about $12 million.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

To clarify the structure of Adam Archuleta's contract, it includes $10 million in guaranteed money as part of a six-year, $30 million deal, the richest signed by a safety in NFL history. According to a NFLPA source, there is a $5 million signing bonus and a $5 million roster bonus due in March 2007, which is prorated as a $1 million bonus per season for salary cap purposes, keeping Archuleta's cap hit lower.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

When word got out yesterday that Jon Kitna was headed to the Lions, the Jets put in a call to Josh McCown, a free agent who played in Arizona last season. McCown, however, isn't interested.
This leaves the Jets with a number of options, including:
• Wait on Patrick Ramsey. Washington is believed to be seeking a fourth-round pick for its backup QB; the Jets are said to be offering no better than a seventh-round pick.
• Sign Kerry Collins. He's on the market and familiar with the area.
• Draft Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler with their fourth pick overall and groom him for the future.
• Attempt to trade up into the Saints slot at No. 2 and draft Matt Leinert. The Saints, who signed free agent Drew Brees yesterday, are willing to trade down but likely would ask for the Jets' No. 4 pick along with their second- or third-round pick in a deal.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Saints' signing of free-agent quarterback Drew Brees on Tuesday won't deter Matt Leinart from coming to New Orleans if the team uses its first-round draft choice to select the former Heisman Trophy winner, his agent said. "From Matt's perspective, we have always assumed there would be a veteran starter with any franchise that drafted him," agent Leigh Steinberg said, "and (assumed) he would not be the immediate starter, wherever he would go, and spending some time learning has proven to be advantageous for a number of the best quarterbacks in football." Steinberg said Tuesday he didn't think Brees' presence in New Orleans would be a problem as far as negotiating a contract with the Saints should the team decide to use its pick on Leinart. It has been reported that Leinart could command a $22 million signing bonus.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

With the loss of Edgerrin James to Arizona, the Colts have paid out a $1.45 million roster bonus to backup Dominic Rhodes. Third-string running back and short-yardage specialist James Mungro, also an unrestricted free agent, continues to wait for an offer from Colts’ officials.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

According to recent comments Colts team president Bill Polian, Mike Vanderjagt has apparently played his last game in an Indianapolis uniform. Vanderjagt’s agent, Gil Scott, has been in contact with the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and, most recently, the Miami Dolphins. Green Bay lost its kicker, Ryan Longwell, to Minnesota over the weekend while the Dolphins have asked that their kicker, Olindo Mare, take a significant pay cut. Mare has balked at the request and has reportedly asked Miami to trade or release him. If that would occur, the Dolphins would seem to have a passing interest in Vanderjagt.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

A name not to forget is Troy Brown. The 13-year veteran told a West Virginia TV station Monday that he hasn’t decided if he’s going to play or retire. He has yet to hear from the Pats. The remaining free agents are uninspiring. Seattle’s Peter Warrick is a former No. 4 pick who caught 79 passes with Cincinnati in 2003, but has hauled in just 22 since. San Diego’s Reche Caldwell, Houston’s Jabar Gaffney and New Orleans’ Az Hakim would seem to lack Patriots toughness, while Peerless Price and Rod Gardner are coming off woeful seasons.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Steelers starting cornerback Deshea Townsend, an unrestricted free agent, will visit the New England Patriots this week.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Steelers yesterday also entertained tight end Aaron Shea, a free agent from the Browns, but no deal was reached as they closed in a contract to bring back Jerame Tuman.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

While retirement from football is a strong possibility, Doug Flutie and Pats coach Bill Belichick are expected to discuss the 43-year-old quarterback’s future with the team one last time. Flutie and Pats quarterback Tom Brady formed a strong bond last season. Brady, according to a source, would like to have Flutie return for another season. There is an outside chance that Flutie may return to the Canadian Football League to close out his career.

Fashion News:
Steve LaCroix, Vikings vice president of sales and marketing, confirmed that the team is redesigning its uniform but would neither reveal details nor comment on a report that the design includes purple pants to be worn at home with purple jerseys. "We are working with the NFL and Reebok on some exciting changes for the 2006 season," LaCroix said. "The process is continuing and we hope to have an unveiling to our fans later in the offseason." Although the Vikings generally have had the same uniform design throughout their 46-year history, several tweaks have been made over time. The most recent was adding a Norseman to the sleeves in the late 1990s, LaCroix said.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Tailback T.J. Duckett understands any dismay the Falcons might have with him and said he hopes he gets another chance with the team to prove himself. After struggling last season, especially in the final five games, Duckett has been mentioned as a trade candidate, although it now appears that the Falcons won't move him unless irresistible compensation arises over the next few weeks. "I hope I'm back," the four-year veteran and former first-round pick said. "I love this city. I love this organization, and I want to get a chance to right what was wrong last year. Personally, I didn't have the best season I could have had. There are areas where I need to improve.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Jets haven't pursued former Cardinal Josh McCown and aren't one of several teams that have contacted the Falcons about trading for backup Matt Schaub, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Dolphins had free safety Chris Hope in for a visit Tuesday, and he is expected to be with the team today. Hope was the starter with Pittsburgh last season and helped the Steelers win the Super Bowl. The former Florida State standout, who has played four NFL seasons, had three interceptions last season.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Some Charger players believe Philip Rivers is going to develop into a top quarterback, some saying he can be better than Drew Brees and others mentioning him as already superior to Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Once offseason workouts begin, Rivers will have the support of his teammates. But the fact is, he will have to prove himself to them as well. And that learning curve, well, it had better progress quickly. “Philip has got to earn our trust, to show he can work as hard as Drew,” said one player. “You're drafted fourth overall, yeah, he better throw 20 touchdowns and less than 10 picks. He's not going to have the luxury of making mistakes. He's going to be under the microscope.”
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

It appears the Chargers' only significant signing this free-agency period could be safety Marlon McCree. Not adding any more free agents would actually help the Chargers in the 2007 draft. It appears likely the NFL will award the Chargers a third-or fourth-round pick based on what the team has lost in this free-agency period vs. what it has gained.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Falcons head coach Jim Mora and Falcons President and General Manager Rich McKay were all on hand with NFL defensive safety Lawyer Milloy, his agent and some other “entourage types” for a steak and lobster dinner at a quiet corner table.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Who Knew? Since 2001, at least three linebackers have recorded career highs in tackles while playing with Ted Washington (who's capable of tying up two blockers): Brian Urlacher (Chicago), Tedy Bruschi (New England) and Danny Clark (Oakland).
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Willie McGinest reportedly was joined by former Ravens tight end Darnell Dinkins and former Giants receiver Tim Carter at dinner with Browns coach Romeo Crennel, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, linebacker Andra Davis, among others. The Browns really like McGinest and hope to get him signed soon, although he may visit other teams. McGinest would fill their huge void of a pass-rush specialist.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Punter Jason Baker, a free agent from the Carolina Panthers, could visit the Ravens later in the week.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Ravens have expressed interest in free-agent quarterback Brian Griese, who started 16 games the past two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was expected to re-sign with the Buccaneers last weekend, but he has begun to talk to other teams.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Ernie Accorsi's statement might mean the team will select a linebacker in the first round, especially since this past weekend's meeting with free agent LaVar Arrington did not result in a deal. The Bengals and Browns continue to show interest in Arrington, who appears to be looking for more money than the Giants are willing to spend.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Today, the Giants could add a potential starter by signing safety Will Demps to a long-term deal. Demps arrived in East Rutherford yesterday and met with the team for much of the afternoon, said Noel LaMontagne, an associate of Eastern Athletic Services, which represents Demps. LaMontagne said the 26-year-old Demps, who signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent in 2002, was taking last night to think about the Giants' offer and his visit. "He loved it," LaMontagne said. "He really felt at home there."
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Jets are hoping to bring in Pats LB Willie McGinest, who was scheduled to meet with the Browns last night.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Packers can't predict whether veteran Javon Walker and promising Terrence Murphy will be playing for them next year. Walker is coming off major knee surgery and has vowed never to play for the Packers again because of a contract dispute; Murphy faces the possibility of retirement because of a narrowing of the spinal column discovered after he injured his neck Oct. 3.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Packers are making a strong push to retain the services of veteran Rod Gardner. Obtained off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Dec. 19, Gardner, a former first-round draft choice, played reasonably well despite knowing only a limited amount of the offense, catching four passes for 67 yards in three games.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Packers were waiting to see what decision St. Louis defensive tackle Ryan Pickett would make after visiting Buffalo. Pickett has an offer from the Rams worth around $3 million a year, but was considering both the Packers and the Bills. After visiting Green Bay Sunday, he met with Bills officials Tuesday and was thought to still be in Buffalo.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Packers welcomed Arizona Cardinals guard Reggie Wells on a visit earlier this week but did not sign him to an offer sheet. Wells, a restricted free agent, traveled from Green Bay to Buffalo for another visit but was not signed by the Bills, either. The Cardinals would have the right to match any offer Wells receives and if they chose not to match would receive a sixth-round draft choice in return.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Saints also entertained free-agent center Melvin Fowler on Tuesday. Fowler, 6-3, 295, started nine games with the Minnesota Vikings last season and was a part-time starter for three years with the Cleveland Browns. He turns 27 this month.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Saints will not be pursuing free-agent quarterback Josh McCown now that they have agreed to terms with Brees. McCown arrived in New Orleans for a visit Monday night but cut the trip short Tuesday.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Vikings receiver Nate Burleson, an O'Dea High School graduate, will visit the Seahawks on Thursday and Friday, his agent told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Seahawks would lose a third-round draft pick if they sign Burleson, a restricted free agent. The Vikings could match any offer for Burleson.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Seahawks had two free agents at team headquarters for visits Tuesday — defensive tackle Russell Davis and defensive end John Abraham. Davis, who spent the past six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, arrived Monday and dined with defensive-line coach Dwaine Board. He also met coach Mike Holmgren and Tim Ruskell, Davis' agent said.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

The Steve Hutchinson drama completed its third day, with the Seahawks mum on their plans for the star left guard and the offer from the Minnesota Vikings that could make it difficult to keep him in Seattle. The Seahawks on Tuesday were still studying the Vikings' offer to Hutchinson. Seattle has until Sunday to decide whether to match Minnesota's seven-year, $49 million offer sheet that includes $16 million in guaranteed money. If they don't, Hutchinson, who has signed the offer sheet, will wear purple in 2006. The Seahawks are in position to match the offer, with at least $24 million in salary-cap space to sign players during the current free-agency period.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, who had 8 1/2 sacks last season for Seattle, was still in Kansas City, but there was no agreement with the Chiefs as of Tuesday evening.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Keep an eye on the Vikings. New coach Brad Childress will never admit it, but do you think he's excited to enter his first season as a head coach with Brad Johnson, 38, as his starter? The Vikings have the 17th pick in the first round. They also have a pair of second-round choices. It would take a Love Boat load of picks for them to have a chance to make a big leap in the first round to get one of the top three quarterbacks.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Jamie Martin - the Rams' backup quarterback last season - spent Tuesday in Cincinnati paying a free-agent visit to the Bengals.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

With the Bears monitoring activity on quarterbacks Josh McCown, Brian Griese and Gus Frerotte, whom Miami waived Tuesday, the emerging issue now is how they get better in 2006.
‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗‗

Willie McGinest, the 34-year-old outside linebacker, on the back burner for the Browns when free agency began, was moved to the front burner when Kalimba Edwards re-signed with the Lions yesterday. Pass rusher is the one need the Browns have not filled while signing five players since free agency began Saturday. McGinest arrived in Cleveland last night to talk about continuing his career with the Browns.

NBC's John Madden called the move ''a risk the Dolphins have to take. To say it's not a risk, you're kidding yourself. Before his injury, he was a top-10 quarterback, an MVP candidate -- he's so big, so strong and throws the ball so well.'' Madden said there will be less pressure on Culpepper ``because I see them still being a running team.''

Patrick Ramsey, Washington's former starting quarterback and the team's passing leader in three of the last four seasons, is on the verge of being traded. Ramsey will likely be traded to the New York Jets for perhaps a sixth-round choice in next month's NFL draft and a future selection.

The Saints will certainly entertain trade offers for the No. 2 selection, a pick that is sure to draw heavy interest. If the Saints keep their selection, they are likely to draft defensive end Mario Williams from North Carolina State, rated the best defensive player in the draft.

The Rams have talked to Carolina punter Jason Baker about the possibility of paying a free-agent visit to St. Louis. Baker led the NFC in net punting average last season (38.9 yards) and is the top remaining punter in what's considered a lean year in free agency at the position. Baker has a visit tentatively scheduled for Baltimore and has drawn interest from Seattle as well.

WR David Patten has attempted to process where he currently stands with the Commanders organization, and has turned to his faith for guidance. Faith, Patten says, is why he believes he will be able to compete without the anger that might be expected of a person dealing with two new, high-priced talents at his position.

Now that Terrell Owens has been released, he and Drew Rosenhaus can negotiate any contract terms they wish with any club. Owens probably will have to accept an incentive-laden deal with relatively little guaranteed money. The Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Dolphins appear to be among the front-runners to sign him and the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets also have been mentioned as possibilities. Rosenhaus declined to comment. "I'm not going to say anything about the situation until it's resolved," he said.

Outside linebacker Rocky Calmus, an unrestricted free agent, has been working out in Arizona and has been awaiting a call from the Colts. Indianapolis obtained Calmus in a trade from Tennessee last September prior to the start of the regular season. He spent the year on injured reserve after undergoing sports hernia surgery. With the loss of David Thornton to the Titans earlier this week, a decision on whether to re-sign Calmus may be made sometime in the next few weeks. Minnesota has also reportedly expressed an interest in bringing him in.

Fox's Jimmy Johnson said Daunte Culpepper's knee is less of a risk than Drew Brees' shoulder: ``If Culpepper is back to his old form, it's a bargain. Even if he has lost a step, he's still a hell of a quarterback.'

Some teams now believe that with the addition of Todd Collins, the Commanders are more likely to have to release Patrick Ramsey, according to a source, because teams will be reluctant to offer much for him, knowing Washington has a glut of quarterbacks. The Commanders would save $1.7 million in salary cap space by cutting or trading Ramsey, and have about $11 million in 2006 salary cap space already devoted to the position.

I sure hope Jerry and Bill have a plan if they had no intention of signing TO. Because cutting Key wasnt smart if we have noone to replace him for 1.5 mil

Vikings receiver Nate Burleson, an O'Dea High School graduate, will visit the Seahawks on Thursday and Friday, his agent told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Seahawks would lose a third-round draft pick if they sign Burleson, a restricted free agent. The Vikings could match any offer for Burleson

I would trade a third for Burleson.

Knew he was an RFA, but I hadn't really thought of it. Not sure if I like that better than a 2nd for J Walker, but it's an option. Burleson, Glenn, Crayton, and Moulds or a re-signed Key would be a decent mix for us.
