He played because the ankle wasn't more serious than people think. It's just a sprain. Ankles are either broken or sprained. I highly doubt it's broken or is a high ankle sprain in which case he wouldn't be playing. He was just playing on an ordinary yet annoying ankle sprain. Now the knee injury might be a problem.
