NFL to play four London games in 2017, equivalent to half a team's home schedule
Eric Edholm,Shutdown Corner

The NFL is expanding its reach in England. The league is planning on four games overseas in the 2017 season, which — if you think about it — is half of a typical team’s home schedule.

“We continue to be incredibly excited by the passion and love for the NFL shown by our millions of UK fans,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “London is an amazing city. We have had tremendous support from our fans, from Mayor Khan and other government leaders and business partners, and we are looking forward to taking the next step in the UK by playing four games in London next season.”

Since 2014, the London series has been a three-game slate each season and every game has sold out. By that measure, it has been a success, and the NFL is expected to hit new TV benchmarks this season in terms of unique viewers. That’s one way to help offset some uneven TV ratings stateside.

And we had a few good games this season in London. Sure, there was an unsatisfying tie between the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders, but the action was good. And the other two games were decided by one score and including a Play of the Year candidate with Landon Collins’ sidewinding interception against the Los Angeles Rams.

Is it good for the players? Some enjoy the trip, and some admit that it can be a tough thing. It’s clear the NFL at least is gearing up the London slate to possibly introduce a team there one day — five years, 10, who knows when? But by ramping up the game in England and building a market slowly, we at least should be ready for the idea that a team one day could be located there.

The league will announce the teams playing in the games and which venues will host them next Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET, via Facebook. We know that the Jacksonville Jaguars and Rams will be among those teams, and the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins are expected to face off there, all of which had been previously determined.

I could live with one game there, always wanted to see London. I have been to Italy, France and Germany but never got over there. I could talk the wife into that game for sure :flagwave:

I don't care, just don't send us over there. My recommendation would be to make a Eagles/Giants home game over there and put them against the Pats.

They're closer to England so it only makes sense time-wise. I've also found most Giants fans enjoy watching their team playing across the pond.

Makes no sense to have 1 team there, and having teams go over there for a game is also crazy.
They should start a euro league, and then there champ plays ours.

9:00 am on the east coast and 6:00 am on the west for one game. This is one of the worst ideas they've had. 1 or 2 was more than enough. If their ultimate goal is really to get a team there then they need to do some more market research.

Greed of the greedy apparently has no limits. Maybe this new round of tax cuts will pacify them a little.

So dumb. I've been to England. There's not enough people over there that actually give a **** about American football to make this a viable option from my experience. Also, if they're still trying to put a team there, then the NFL is ********.

So untrue. NFL games are drawing TV audiences of c.15m per week in UK alone with similar pro rata audiences in many other European countries. These games are way oversubscribed and often sell out in minutes. There are a number of European TV markets now that are bigger than many cities with NFL franchises.

The sport has been played in Europe for over 30 years. The audience is mature and very knowledgeable. An increasing percentage of NFL revenue comes from Europe - fans who are essentially paying a high percentage of NFL players wages are entitled to have live games.

I live in one of the smaller European countries, yet 20,000 fans per annum in my country travel to London at least once a year to watch games.

Goodell. Fix the real problems. Just get full time refs and define a frickin catch. That's all I ask.
Then you can go dream about world football.

I'd way rather have the Cowboys play in Mexico. Not just because of the distance but growing a fan base there makes absolute sense. Let the east coast teams have England.

I've never watched one of those games and never will unless the Cowboys are playing. I'm surprised the Cowboys haven't played in one for a ratings boost. I often wonder how the players like it.

Hoping Dallas is one of the four. If so I'm there and will take my kids to their first Dallas game ever.

They should bring at least one game up north to Old Trafford in Manchester.
