I may be wrong here but has the NFL changed the method in which it displays similar names on the same team on jerseys?

In the past, if 2 players on the same team shared the same last name, the nameplate on their jersey would include their first initial as well to discern one player from the other. (example: "N. Jones" and "F. Jones")
In some cases, 2 players would share the same first initial (or more) as well so you'd end up with something like "Trav. Wilson" and "Tram. Wilson" on the jersey.

It seems like the first initial is gone now and just the last name appears on all the players' jerseys. Probably because some of the nameplates were getting ridiculously long and thus, ridiculous looking.

Depends on the team, if I'm not mistaken. There was a year we had two "R. Williams" on the team, so Roy 31 was "Ro. Williams".

I think it really depends on the team, although I'm not sure.

I remember that but I was watching some games recently (Hamlin? and Hamlin?) where I was sure there was a couple guys on the team with the same last name but didn't see the first initial.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I haven't seen a jersey with a first intial yet this season. (Brandon Williams, Jason Williams, Roy Williams)

I'm sure the .gif proving me wrong will be posted next.

Might be preseason - no need for the team to spend the $ for a personalized jersey if a guy hasn't made the team yet.

maybe this change took place last year...

I remember Pacman Jones' jersey said "Jones" but we had Felix Jones then as well. (whose jersey also read "Jones" only.)

I'm pretty sure it's just up to the players at this point. Tom Brady's jersey said "BRADY" even while he was Kyle Brady's teammate.

The NFL changed this policy last offseason. They decided on doing away with first intials figuring you could tell who is who simply by their number!

They changed the policy a couple years ago. I know it was the same year the pats signed kyle brady. I remember thinking they changed it because the nfl didn't want to force their big star to put a "T." on his jersey nameplate.
