With their 1st round pick already invested in wide-receiver Roy Williams, the Cowboys weren't scheduled to be part of the action until the late seconnd round - and then elected to trade out of that spot. With their first pick the 69th overall, the Cowboys focused on the defensive side of the ball, adding pass-rushing specialists Victor Butler and Brandon Williams and one of the top non-Combine prospects in the draft - Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams, in the middle rounds. The Cowboys kept the most intriguing developmental quarterback in the draft in-state with the selection of Texas A&M's Stephen McGee, and got exceptional value in the seventh round with cornerback Mike Mickens -- Rob Rang, TheSportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com

Hamlin along with Smith and maybe Mickens we'll help us the quickest in 2009.

I agree. In my book, value-wise, Hamlin was the best pick. But hey, for all I know the guy may not even make the team. Maybe Mickens too.

I just wish Dallas would have moved up a few spots and took Unger.

We could have got a 1st round talent on the cheap.

From a conventional "value" standpoint, they are probably correct. The majority of our choices were chosen 2-3 rounds earlier than most pundits projected. Hamlin is one of the few who was chosen a little lower than he was "supposed" to be. Mickens was the only other, but he had mitigating circumstances due to his injury.

I don't see how this class could possibly be graded any higher than a C. There is too much ambiguity to raise it higher. Plus, we did not get what seems to be a clearcut starter nor a player that can be expected to start any time soon. It might look better a few years from now, but that all depends.

Mickens has a shot to be the steal of the draft. I think he carried a second round grade for many, but the knee injury allowed him to drop.

"Best pick" based on what? They had Jason Williams rated highest (64th), followed by Mike Mickens (70th), Stephen McGee (96th), DeAngelo Smith (105th) and Michael Hamlin (109th). Talent-wise, they'd have to say Williams, and value-wise, they'd have to say Mickens.

I like his chances also, but lets not get carried away. Even prior to the injury issues, he was on the cusp of the third round if he was fortunate. He certainly was never considered among the top 5-8 CBs, which was about where he'd need to have been if he was a rock solid second round type.

Same here. Or even moved up higher and grabbed any one of 2-3 other guys who could actually star for us someday. I would like to at least have 1-2 guys that can at least potentially (and eventually) be real impact players. Maybe we did get them and I'm not seeing it.

he was expected to go a couple of rounds higher than he did, according to NFLDS

but like I said, "interestingly enough"

Im sure we did.

If we can have have a draft like we did last year on the 2nd day then hopefully we can strike gold again.

I'd be estatic with the 08 draft minus Felix and Jenkins based off of what i've seen.

Given Jerry Jones' history, he's never ever been shy to move up and grab what he wants. Perhaps he simply showed more restraint than he ever has and I think Stephen and the scouts indeed had him very much in a mental straightjacket so to speak.

Stephen appeared more pensive and into it in this draft moreso than any other. Jerry looked more reserved and didn't show a lot of emotion, which is unusual. There were no Kavika Pittman high-fives this time around. This was a departure, and I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has wanted a less excitable Jerry, so perhaps this is what we get. We'll just have to see what happens.

I agree. The passive approach in the 2nd Round is my only criticism of this draft.

This is well spoken and I'm not sure it even represents a criticism...just a recognition of reality in our position and a "weak" draft class. The passive approach to the 2nd Round remains the only place I question the team's approach.

But Mickens was ranked higher than Hamlin in their own rankings (70th, compared to 109th), and he was drafted much later (227th, compared to 166th).

It's kind of odd how many places had Mickens ranked highly but seem to have completely forgot about him since he fell in the draft.

Those were the days. :laugh2:

The only point I'd make about Round 2 is that it appears the player we really wanted at that stage was Unger.

Robiskie and Delmas had been taken much, much earlier.

With respect to Unger, I'm guessing we were taken off guard when Seattle leap-frogged us. We probably expected Unger to drop to us, and I'm pretty confident that Seattle didn't announce they were going to leap frog us to give us a "heads up".

How would we have even known that we were going to get leap frogged for Unger? We literally were 2 picks from getting him. Now, if Chicago or someone gave us a heads up, or we had heard through the rumor mill, I'd be more frustrated.

I guess you could argue that because Unger was so highly thought of, we shouldn't have risked losing him and jumped up 2-4 picks to secure the pick. But again, that assumes Unger was rated that highly (maybe he was, I don't know). Unger may have simply been the highest rated guy in a very weak 2nd round and the only guy really worth drafting at 51. And once he was gone, there was no longer any value in Round 2 (in our scouts' minds).
