All i care about is the grade 4 years from now, I remember all the praise we got for our 06 class in the days after that draft but in hindsight it's looking more and more like one of our worst drafts ever

The only point I'd make about Round 2 is that it appears the player we really wanted at that stage was Unger.

Robiskie and Delmas had been taken much, much earlier.

With respect to Unger, I'm guessing we were taken off guard when Seattle leap-frogged us. We probably expected Unger to drop to us, and I'm pretty confident that Seattle didn't announce they were going to leap frog us to give us a "heads up".

How would we have even known that we were going to get leap frogged for Unger? We literally were 2 picks from getting him. Now, if Chicago or someone gave us a heads up, or we had heard through the rumor mill, I'd be more frustrated.

I guess you could argue that because Unger was so highly thought of, we shouldn't have risked losing him and jumped up 2-4 picks to secure the pick. But again, that assumes Unger was rated that highly (maybe he was, I don't know). Unger may have simply been the highest rated guy in a very weak 2nd round and the only guy really worth drafting at 51. And once he was gone, there was no longer any value in Round 2 (in our scouts' minds).

It's funny like that sometimes. I heard Chicago wanted that Mitchell guy Oakland grabbed and was killed for. Chicago only then decided to trade out of that spot. It's hard to predict those things. To get Unger they would've had to trade a pick, so it really was a 3 for 1 trade, considering what we got from the Bills.

Brewster, McGee and Hodge for Unger.

I think that C is about the right grade. If you look at the players they grabbed vs. NFLDS rankings it looks like an average draft class. Last year we had a good draft because of what we did in the late rounds and this year rounds 5-7, look strong to me. If our scouts are right with Brewster, Williams and Butler then this could be a good draft.
Jason Williams - OLB - NFLDS - 64
Mike Mickens - CB - NFLDS - 70
Stephen McGee - QB - NFLDS - 94
DeAngelo Smith - CB - NFLDS - 105
Michael Hamlin - FS - NFLDS - 109
Brandon Williams - DE/OLB - NFLDS - 129
David Buehler - K - NFLDS - 134
Robert Brewster - OG - NFLDS - 159
John Phillips - TE - NFLDS - 194
Stephen Hodge - SS/OLB - NFLDS - 231
Victor Butler - DE - NFLDS - 263
Manuel Johnson - WR - NFLDS - 341
That being said lets wait until the players play the game, alot of how they develop depends on coaching, motivation & how much a player wants it.
Writters are paid for their opinions but last year everyone was praising the KC Chiefs draft as the best and people were saying the Falcons were idiots because they passed on Dorsey. How did that work out?

This is what I don't get. According to that list, the Cowboys really only reached for Victor Butler and Brewster. They also get 4-5 guys way later than projected meaning they were gret value or down right steals. According to the list, we ought to be real happy with the draft while keeping an eye on Butler to see if our scouts or the pundits were right. Also, there are other list that show Butler and Brewster much high and not so much of a reach.

The problem is this, with no round 1 pick the best you can ever hope to get is a B, unless your the patriots. Then you can trade all your picks for a bag of cheetos puffs and get a B+.

That is where the problem lies.... None of the draft boards truely agree with where players should be drafted later in the draft.

I just wish Dallas would have moved up a few spots and took Unger.

We could have got a 1st round talent on the cheap.

I fretted over that too. Really wanted Unger, but perhaps Cowboys wanted Unger but just not enough to move up. I am just curious to know if Brewster was the fall back plan to Unger, or a legit target regardless.

If Unger really is a first round talent, would anyone complain of trading a future first for him?

Brewster, McGee and Hodge for Unger.

I had heard Saturday morning that the Bears announced that pick #49 was up for trade.

If I knew it, the Cowboys should have.

And this seems to continue a pattern of the Cowboys missing out on quality players their scouts liked by not being agressive enough to move up a few spots. (Greg Jennings, Daryn College, and now Unger)

And McGee was taken with a pick the Cowboys already had, Detroit's 4th rounder, wasn't he?

I would go one step further.

2002 was supposedly the best one ever. I still recall getting shining grades for the likes of Andre Gurode, Antonio Bryant, Derek Ross and Jamar Martin. We all know how that developed with only Gurode turning a corner after four years.

Don't feel bad. I was much older and I did not expect that to turn out like it did. It looked pretty good even after the first year. It just fell apart after that.

We could have give a 6th to move a few spots and swapped seconds to grab Unger. This was the worst part of the draft for me. I like the majority of players we took and I am confident in our scouting department. We get bad grades because of the no sexy picks on Day 1.

Nice Canadian flag ;)

The 2002 draft taught me to put all of the draft grades into perspective. Until they hit the field for a few years, we're just guessing. I still enjoy reading about the guesses, but they are guesses all the same.

I've got no clue about this draft and how it'll turn out. I like it that there are so many coming in to compete for jobs. I still think we lost a too many games because of a lack of competition on the lower half of the roster. So many of those guys see the field and/or push the guy in front of them.

I'm actually most excited about the kicker pick (sorry hostile). I am so absolutely frustrated watching every single dadgum kickoff landing in play. If he pushes Folk, great. If he wins the kickoff job outright, great. Just get the ball into the endzone.
