CNN)For years, pro football players and their families have been trying to warn us about the devastating effects of suffering repeated concussions. They've reported memory problems, outbursts of aggression, even suicidal and homicidal tendencies.
Only recently have the rest of us started to listen, as black and white data begins to paint a clearer picture of the concussion crisis in football.
In April, a federal judge gave final approval to a class-action lawsuit settlement between the NFL and thousands of former players who accused the NFL of hiding the dangers of concussions.
No doubt at least in part because of the flood of criticism the NFL received over its handling of the issue, the league in February announced it was appointing its first chief health and medical adviser. Dr. Elizabeth Nabel, president of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a professor at Harvard Medical School, is tasked with overseeing the league's medical strategy in advancing player safety.
Nabel's credentials are impeccable.

The media is intensely focused on taking the NFL down. Why don't they do this with UFC fighting or rodeo clowns or some of the contestants on the X Factor?

Whether it's concussions, the Commanders logo, the coach/executive hiring practices, the anti-trust exemption, the off-the-field actions of players....it's just a constant stream of cesspool gook that screams of mob-like journalism.

I think it's because they grew up in the shadows of athletes, and they resent the fortunes of corporate billionaires of any walk. I also think they resent the fact that football destroys the ratings for anything they do. They're basically broadcasting to nobody all day Sunday in the fall.

They simply ignore the fact that lots of people struggle physically when then get old, and depression and dementia strike a significant portion of the population these days. Especially for people who once seemingly had it all, and their time has passed.

I'm not saying it doesn't deserve study and consideration. It certainly does. But there are many more former NFL players experiencing no mental effects from playing than those that are.
