Nick Harris: Deronte Jones had a strong 2nd interview

He was a disaster at LSU finishing 10th in the old SEC.

Stop with these nonsense off the beaten path moves from the draft to the coaching staff - hire the consensus best coach available and pick the consensus best player.

I’m so sick of this team
A couple of questions Mike.

1. What was the context or situation at LSU during his time as DC?

2. What was happening globally that may of had an impact on his roster?

3. Why was this particularly challenging for his system?

4. You speak of consensus, who exactly does this include? The Cowbots front office? The fans? The media? Who forms this consensus?

5. Is it not possible that in 5 years time spent with different DCs that he may have learned somethings and is more prepared to be a DC now?

Lastly, Of who we've brought in so far for 2nd interviews he'd be my second choice. For me Gannon is a hard pass.

But I also think there will be more in person interviews.

Only issue for me is, what's his calling card? What does he hang his hat on? It's one thing to knock the interview out of the ball park, it's another thing to come up with a scheme that works well for the players. That's critical. I'm encouraged but not sold
You're right, but I wish you knew why youre right to be critical.

He's not my first choice, I think it was shabazz or maybe Philadelphia who hit thst nail on the head in another thread.

But I'll add these thoughts to theirs. First we dont need to do a complete 180 on D first year. Fact is we need more talent. At several positions. Regardless of coach hire. Regardless of system bought in. We can go from the basement to middle of pack and be a competitive play off team with our offense.

And the positive for him from my perspective is he watched Flores in Minnesota over time work to bring in the players he needed to make his system work.

Karl Scott up in Seattle. He's on staff . Passing game coordinator. He's got those dbs flying around. They are physical and they cover. They tackle well. I'd actually get him in for a in person interview while we wait on Denver to get beat. It can't hurt
Good Post, watching that Seattle defense dominate last night against San Fran made me think somebody from that defense should definitely get a look that is for sure. That front 7 is scary good, I hadn't watched Seattle much this season, but they look like the team to beat for the Super Bowl. I will take a look at Karl Scott.

Like Leonhard we have to wait until Seattle is out of playoffs or the week in between NFCC and Superbowl.

Here is the main problem

There is not one guy doing these ‘evaluations’ who has any track record of hiring good coordinators and zero who have any idea how to actually evaluate what is a good or bad, sound or unsound defensive scheme

Not one

Luck will determine if we get someone good

Forget about "schemes".

Coaching is about not having a huge ego and adapting your scheme to fit what talent you have.

Coordinators are also responsible for game plans. Knowing what the other offense has. Who they need to focus on. Taking away what they like to do. Tendancies. A very over looked part of their job.

And third. Being unpredictable. Being creative. Being aggressive when you need to be. Defense is much more reactive than offense. But they can shift up what they try to take away each week. As well as disguising what they do.

But it takes talented and experienced players to pull some of this off. Which we sorely lack.

I think Eberflus lacked in all 3 areas. And he just, in general, looked like a prick.

None of us know anything about any of these candidates. To pretend otherwise is just delusional.

Having a good GM to know what to look for is important. Which we dont have either. So its all a crap shoot. Maybe we luck into someone who can actually help. Or we get another Eberflus.

Either way, it all depends on a serious upgrade of talent. Which again, I have my very serious doubts that our GM can adequately address.

This all boils down to this: Our biggest and most glaring problem is a failure of the GM. Not breaking news, but just the fact.

Too many question marks for me.
1) Not great in his one year as a defensive coordinator
2) Is he a Brian Flores disciple or not? I think not.

I would like to see a coach with a 3-4 background. Is he that guy?
He is more Zimmer then Flores

A quick look at a Vikings fan forum. They seem to want Morris to replace Flores

How soon do the new head Coaches start filling in their staff. All of a sudden some of these guys will start getting swallowed up.
Find who you want and sign em !

Technically and t hus far historically accurate, Jones employs a more modern matchquarters look than Zimmer.

We dont know how much Flores has influenced him though.

Thanks. Heck yes

I want someone thats from the Mike McDonald tree or Rex Ryan. Some combination. We need aggressive attacking defense with purpose and deception. No more of this passivity crap. Go get parker or Leonhard. I'm confident Jim Leonhard can help us get Darren Rizzi. A package deal. Christian Parker is my 2nd option. A close 2nd. From the vic fangio tree. He might be able to bring a good assistant with him from Philly.
Exactly where I am at as well. Jones is 3rd behind Leonhard and Parker— and maybe behind Bullen as well.

I wouldn’t hate the hire. But it would be more like getting a solid double vs getting a homerun.

If he's more like Zimmer, then no thanks.

If he uses concepts like Brian Flores, then absolutely yes.

Frankly, I want someone from the Fangio tree. Seattle's defense would be great, and someone from that defense would be ideal. However, they rely heavily on zone coverage.

Of the new guys we are focused on he’s the the candidate I am least excited about other than Gannon

Why do you keep bringing up his name?
To get you and the others ready when we sign him (not saying I want this to happen, so get that through your brain), i'm just saying we have Jerry here, and you leave me more lost than he ever would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :flagwave: :flagwave: :flagwave: :muttley:

From google

Daronte Jones' defensive schemes emphasize aggressive, modern principles with strong pass-game focus, using disguise, man coverage, and rotating safeties within a base 4-3 or 4-2-5 look, aiming to disrupt rhythm with press looks, blitzes, and varied zone concepts, heavily influenced by Brian Flores' aggressive style, making him a candidate for complex, adaptable defenses

Ol Jerry should have brought somebody in, as an advisor to help with the search then, maybe a senior defensive mind, such as Bill Belichick or somebody like Dave Wannstedt. I don't want Ol Jerry picking by his lonesome. I figure Dallas brass votes on these decisions, Ol Jerry, Stephen, McClay, Schottenheimer and some of the coaching staff as well as maybe some scouts could have a voice.
