After these last 15 years, I don't get upset with any of their draft picks. I would build a team totally different. I am not going to let Jerry's screwups rsuse my blood pressure . The last time that I hot really pissed was when they drafted Mo. I was blasted on this board and told to leave by many, so it is not worth arguring over. All of these posters that thinks their support and opinions of the Cowboys makes a difference are fooling themselves. Jerry and the Cowboys don't give a rat's *** about our opinions or support. Just chill out.

I don't understand how we can give them a pass for selecting Jaylon Smith with such a premium pick.

It's nothing more than ego driven and getting cute.

Just give them credit if he is 100% next year because then he becomes a steal

My opinion of this draft class will come 3 years from now.

Among the many problems with this organization....the coaches have WAY too much influence on the draft.

Well, the coaches didn't decide to take Smith. That was Jerry all the way. He is the only one except Stephen that doesn't have to worry about his job.

The coaches may have been on board but this was driven top down.

Immediately you'll have two starters out of this group.

Elliott will get the carries of a starter even he is the guy out there on the first offensive snap of the game.

The two DL will in effect become one "starter". Both will get plenty of snaps.

IF Smith makes a full recovery, then their's your 3rd starter starting next season.

I hate these picks on the surface, too. It's a bizarre set of choices, and it's disappointing.

The only thing is, drafts have a way of turning out differently than they look on paper. Years I think we've killed it haven't turned out. And years I've been pretty disappointed with have worked out fine. If just Elliott and Smith end up in probowls, that's all we'll remember eventually.

But I agree. It's hard not to have that *** feeling after yesterday when you look at what we're doing.

It's just really hard to beleive that the draft really is a crapshoot for the most part.

What starter was there at #34?

I think Dodd could have started the first 4 games in the absence of Lawrence, but after that... probably not. And he was gone at #33.

I didn't see many "starter quality" picks after Smith at #34.

Are you saying no one can beat out Wilcox or Church? We're thin on DL and LB. Is your position that no one drafts a starter in round 2? Or that our D is so stacked that we can't possibly replace anyone on the DL, LB or safety positions.

Jones will replace Wilcox or Church.

You drafted a guy who can beat out someone for a starting job at linebacker come next season.

The two DL will get enough snaps to be one "starter".

Wait, so there were no starters after 34 but somehow we found immediate starters in the 3rd round and beyond?

Define a starter?

A guy that is out there for the first snap of the game for their respective unit OR a guys who gets enough playing time to be considered a "starter"?

There weren't many guy available AFTER pick 34 that were going to come in and be a full-time starter for this team.

I'll stick by that statement.

So do we go into every draft looking for back-up players? I'd assume then you agreed with Jerry drafting for back-up players.

A starter to me is a guy who comes in and beats out the current player at a respective position. That's what you do on Day 1 (which I consider the first 3 rounds). You try to find starting caliber players. A guy may not start on opening day, but most everyone knows it's only a matter of time. Smith may be a good player but he might not play this year. That's a waste of a second round pick.

You're bitter about the 2nd round pick... I get it.

We can revisit this the start of next season.

I'm not bitter at all. Not in the least. I'm discussing a philosophy more than anything.

Understood.

I just think it's darned difficult to get first-game starters out of the draft (after round 1), especially if you're drafting by BPA as opposed to need. Could you look at say Church and say, "OK can I safety here at #32 to beat out Church?"

Yeah I'll grant you that you probably could BUT is that unnamed safety going to bring more to the table over the course of their career, and not just 2016 as opposed to Smith? If Smith can't play then yeah the unnamed safety takes it. But if Smith can play... well that guy will blow-out the career of any safety you get to replace Church IMO.

Outside of Zeke. Which I want to be on record as a reach of the greatest draft reach proportions. Maybe 2 guys make this roster. zeke. Jaylon on ir. And then all the others who knows. Round 2 and 3 had some studs. And we got none. Smith is a stud but a huge question. I hope he heals.

Correction trading up for a kicker and then zeke....

That's because we don't have an actual GM. We have Jerry, who is basically just a fan. He often defers to the scouts/coaches and then jumps in to make the tie-breaking vote if necessary. That is, unless he falls in love with a certain player, but that normally is only the case in some of the early rounds.
And while it's probably good other's have a big say in the draft other than Jerry, it would be much better if we actually had a competent GM with a vision and plan.
