The New Orleans Saints agreed to a four-year contract with cornerback Randall Gay worth up to $17.8 million, according to NFL.com and the New Orleans Times Picayune.

The Times Picayune is reporting that the deal is worth about $6.7 million in salary and bonuses over the first two years, with a chance to go up to $9 million, based on playing time.

Gay, who played at LSU, made the Saints his first visit and his first priority in free agency according to the Times Picayune.

Gay played all 16 games for the New England Patriots last season. The 25-year-old made three starts with three interceptions and 38 total tackles.

Gay is the second cornerback the Patriots lost to free agency this week. Asante Samuel agreed to a six-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

Running back Aaron Stecker, who rushed for a career-high 448 yards last season, also agreed to re-sign with the Saints according to The Associated Press.

Wow. The Patriots are getting picked clean in the secondary. Betcha if McFadden is still on the board when the Pats pick, Jerry will be ringing their phone off da hook.

Hopefully this solidifies their #1 pick being a linebacker, pushing corners down the draft.

Yhea, I guess I am a bit surprised that the Pats aren't re-signing either Samuels or Gay. But that said, maybe Bellicheck thinks in his scheme any "decent" CB would look like a star?

But you look at the Pats LBs, and they let Colvin go (I think), and Seau and Brushchi (sp?) are pretty old, and then they let 2 of their top 3 CBs go, plus Moss is still unsigned . . . . lot's of changes going on over there.

Wouldn't have minded having Randall here, oh well. He was probably the best value of the FA CB's.

Yhea, I think it's clear we're going CB in the draft, and early as well. Unless we pull off a trade or something in the next few weeks.

So, other than us, who really is looking likely to draft a CB in Round 1?

Not Philly now.
Don't think the Saints.

The Cards, perhaps.

Raven's too and possibly the Lions, though both teams have other needs as well. The Raven's might take a WR and the Lions need O-Line help.

Patriots, Lions, and Cardinals should all be looking for a CB early in the draft.

Didn't the Lions just get the CB from the Cleveland Browns? Can't think of his name now.

EDIT: Bodden is the CB the Lions picked up in their trade with Cleveland. I think he's supposed to be fairly good.

I'm thinking we could get lucky and a guy like M Jenkins can fall to us.

I'd still guess that 2 CBs are taken before us. Maybe DRC and McKelvin, but we could still land one of the top 3.

signing average vets doesn't preclude teams from taking a top corner

think Houston is done because they signed Jacque Reeves?

No, but it takes a glaring need and shifts how they think about the draft, particularly with a deep class of corners.

I'm lovin' this. There was one team in the NFL I feared last year and it was the NE Cheatriots. They've now lost a starting WR, their best CB and their nickel CB - and theymay lose more. This is good when you consider we've lost only our (terrible) nickel CB and kept one of the best teams in the NFL intact. Oh, and we still have 2 first rounders coming up. The Giants have lost G. Wilson, K. Mitchell and Torbor and will not have that insane playoff luck 2 years in a row. The Saints are looking impressive, but I like Dallas' chances as well as anyone's next year. Hard to believe that a 13-3 #1 seed is only going to lose a crappy nickel back and still gain two 1st rounders. We're also one of the youngest teams in football. Barring significant injuries (knock on wood), it's going to be good to be a Cowboys fan in '08.

I got confused by reading the title of the post. I thought it was a post saying that there's no reason to by Commanders jerseys.
