I had no idea this was a part of the new CBA. Live and learn. I expect we'll be seeing other little known elements of the new CBA showing up this off-season as well. WOW did guys like WRs Laurent Robinson and Victor Cruz, among others, get the shaft after last season's performances.

Both took advantage of their situations. They will get paid. It is up to them to continue performing to make more money. In Robinson's case, he fell to the perfect team in the perfect situation to make his name.

But, that being said, I would like to see all contracts performance based.

The problem with that is if the contracts per based on personal performance, then it becomes about "me, me, me, and my stats". Basing the contracts on the team performance would be better. Or if they had it based on personal performance, include a bigger bonus for team wins, playoff appearances/wins.

fortdick: No doubt about it. Robinson and Cruz are gonna cash in on last year's successes.

jsw: Always thought PBCs would be a good idea w/o taking into account the possibility of upping the "me, me, me" factor. Good point. Hadn't considered that.

I think they should be MORE incentive based rather than the opposite

Maybe pay a tier salary for all players based on experience. Then load team based incentives into it. "Win the superbowl and everyone gets paid like a franchise player."

"Performance-based pay" is not based on performance, as in statistics or how well a guy plays. It's based only on playing time.

The more you play and the less money you make, the more your PBP bonus is. So, for example, Phil Costa would have gotten a much bigger bonus than Laurent Robinson, even though Robinson played much better, because Costa's contract is smaller and he played a lot more.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't realized that was how PBP was determined. Good to know.
