Last time I checked 3 sacks was a big deal?Come on now Merriman had his own little segment for his 2 sacks and 3 tackles for losses vs.Colts.How manny sacks does Ware have this year so far?9-10?

Ware will be improved with a year in an NFL weightroom....

He has edge moves only. When he can bull Tackles and go inside more he'll be unstopable.

I agree with this. He just don't have a whole lot of moves right now. He either speed rushes on the outside or tries to run the OL over. Pushing the OL backwards he's been pretty decent at (anyone remember the Cardinals game where he pushed the OL backwards and then with his left arm shoved Josh McCown down, forcing an Anthony Henry interception?), however, he'd be a lot more dangerous if he got more effective with his hands (he seems to be learning if the Carolina game shows anything), and if he could learn how to pull off an effective Freeny-esque spin move he'd be dominating.

That's not unlike asking Troy Hambrick to run like Emmitt Smith. At some point, it becomes all about actual ability and not learning.

I don't know that anyone in the league can 'spin move' like Dwight Freeney.

Certainly Ware will get better, and he needs to but really, how many other DE's do you see doing the Freeney 'spin move?'

Actually, ever since Freeney started dominating with it, I've seen quite a few DEs trying it out - they of course don't do it nearly as effectively as him.

He doesn't have to be as good as it as Freeney (hence why I said Freeney-esque), but a variety in his rush would help a lot. Right now he pretty much has a) run around the OL has fast as you can or b) rush the OL head on and try to push him backwards into the quarterback.

I'd like to see him get some kind of inside move.

See the Cardinals game where he bulled rushed Lenorad Davis into the QB and forced an errant throw that led to Anthony Henry's pic-six.

This past sat no doubt was Ware biggest game as a pro. He did a great job in both pass rushing and run stopping. I think he is finally getting adjusted to the OLB and the responsibilities that come with the change of position. Now he must start showing the consistency that is expected from a high draft choice.

Aside from an occasional inside stunt, this is exactly how Charles Haley made a living, the outside pass rush in particular. He had a very underrated bull rush as well.

Haley was MUCH better with his hands however and one huge factor for Haley was the fact that he had arms longer his legs.

Ware, I'm sure, knows better than anyone the need for him to develop a secondary move. The thing he now possesses is the prized asset for any pass rusher, and that is an incredible burst off the edge. Most guys don't have that. IMHO, what he needs next is certainly something he would be able to develop, in time.

I'm in agreement that he is still in the process of learning. The wheels are turning, but he's doing more thinking as opposed to simply playing. Once this kid becomes confident and comfortable in what he's supposed to do, so that he may play "fast," I believe we will have a truly special game-changing presence on our hands.

I think that Ware uses primarily the outside speed rush simply because he's concerned about losing containment if the other team runs towards him. He displayed more moves in preseason than he does now. But if he spins inside and the team tosses the ball outside on his edge he's going to blow his assignment and even a running play could net big yards. Maybe it's a matter of having faith in the other guys to prevent a simple toss left from turning into a 35 yard run, maybe it's a matter of knowing when to use the other moves. Either way I think it will come with time.

No way BP is going to sign off on a spin move by his OLB. The spin move takes Freeny completely out of run support and gap containment. I guess practicing against Peyton and playing guys like Brady or Rothlisburger (sp?) gap containment isn't that big of an issue, but we line up against McNabb twice a year. Bill is old school. He wants the rushers to colapse the pocket and still be a factor in run support. I'd personally let Ware go crazy with spin moves and stunts and have the ILB cheat over behind Ware on those plays, but Bill isn't going to do that.

I'd say Ware is not really lacking moves as much as he needs more practice to recognize when and how to implement each. I think he decides before he lines up if he is going to bull rush or try the corner. With practice he'll learn to pick up on cues and formations to decide which will be more successful. He'll also get better at stunts and at delayed blitzes. Finally he needs more strength to control his blockers in run support and to more quickly collapse the pocket.

What will make either Ware or Merriman great is their dedication during the season and off-season. We'll see how that plays out next year.
