Now hear me out. Very devastating loss but since the league is more of a passing league, we really lost a nickel lb. Barry Church would be our best bet at that position leaving more time for MJ to get on field(I know he will probably get injured next week). Of course we will see if younging (hitchens, hollowman, smith) come in to save the day but as far as those 3rd n long, we need 3 safeties on field.

That's a possibility. You have a couple safeties that could serve in a "hybrid" position.

I mentioned this last year. If I were the Cowboys, I would have looked to have moved Church to OLB. He's not a completely traditional OLB type of build, but the league is so pass oriented now that he should be able to get enough protection up front and won't take on a lot of runs anyway. Plus, he can't cover as a safety. My main point is that I don't think Church is very good at safety and it is worth the shot of trying him somewhere else.

Anyway, I doubt we'll try and get creative with Lee's loss. We'll probably try to put a veteran there and get mediocre play from that position and go 6-10.

Passing league. Let's take the only safety with any sort of experience and have him play a role he's unfamiliar with.

I know i have seen Church at nickel lb last year. He should have no problem with knowing the responsibilities of that role. Physically he can do it, like Yakuza said I just dont have faith in his coverage from the safety position..i dont care what experience your talking about because acceleration only decreases with age.

Typically on nickel downs, you'd see 5 DB's and 2 LB's. It would've been Carr/Claiborne/Scandrick/Church/Wilcox, with Lee and Holloman, in all likelihood. Now I can see the extra coming in to play an underneath zone next to Holloman. Maybe if Matt Johnson actually stays healthy and plays well, he can play deep and allow Wilcox to fly around underneath in the Sean Lee coverage role.

Remember, even though it's a coverage role, part of coverage still is being physical within the 5-yard cushion and physically matching up at the catch point. You can't just throw 6 CB's out there. Size and strength help, even in coverage. We'd be losing some ability to jam and play physical at the route break & catch points with a DB subbing in for Lee, but it's probably the next best option. Carter progressing as a coverage guy would really be best case, and allow for both the athleticism and physical abilities, but it doesn't appear to be realistic.

I've made mention to the same. And Church can't cover speed. But he can cover a TE and he can tackle like Lee can.

Not a terrible idea at all. I trust our DC I know that.

There really isn't that much difference in size between Lee and Church... the idea could have merit particularly in the nickel.

Or to take the slow footed safety out of mid-deep coverage? The team continues to neglect the position (we have 5 SS's, didn't look @ FAs and neglect the position early in the draft outside of Roy) and wonder why the team is poor in pass D. We gave up the deep ball even when the team had a great pass rush.

Watch out on the whole "can cover TE" talk lol. He can cover TEs about as good as Sean Lee not an elite S just sayin lol. But I need to stop with the hating on Church we are gonna need him this year if we want any hope.

Yeah I simply don't understand this. The ONE safety that shows he can play....let's move him from his position so we can see the stellar play of guys who have shown NOTHING in this league.

I'm going to be 100. I have a lot of questions about this defense. A LOT. One I don't have is about Church. He's one of the few guys I know what i'm going to get. Why on earth would anyone want to mess that up.

I really feel that he is NOT the longterm answer at safety for this team. If he can move into the box more it would take advantage of his skillset better. I think.
Would love to see a trial.

He is familiar with defending passes. And since it is a passing league he is a fit. Everybody agrees that Church does wrap up onj tackles as good as anybody on the defense.
