No team has used the franchise tag as much as the Cowboys in the last 15 years

Dallas Cowboys franchise tags over the last 15 years:

2012: Anthony Spencer (no contract extension)

2013: Anthony Spencer (no contract extension)

2015: Dez Bryant (signed 5-year contract)

2018: DeMarcus Lawrence (no contract extension)

2019: DeMarcus Lawrence (signed 5-year contract)

2020: Dak Prescott (no contract extension)

2021: Dak Prescott (signed 4-year contract)

2022: Dalton Schultz (no contract extension)

2023: Tony Pollard (no contract extension)

2026: George Pickens

So you have a 3 time SB winner and five time SB participant in between the Bungles and US

I would say that this stat is meaningless

Not saying its necessarily its good or bad but its a stat likely to be expected when you have the longest tenured NFL General Manager.

Tobin of the Bengals is the 2nd longest tenured GM and his team is 3rd on the list of most franchises tags used

Doesn’t surprise me.

Hang on to that cash signing bonus a little longer and invest it elsewhere, thereby mitigating the overall cost of the actual contract. Think about what a guy like Jerry Jones can do with 30-70 million in the span of a year.

This is why the personnel decision makers being too close to the money (it’s their own) is a conflict.

But in their own minds, it’s how they outsmart the rest of the league. For money purposes, they are more than likely right, but it contrasts with winning football for sure.

And yet it has yielded nothing. The front office in Dallas are bottom feeders.

I know he's not using those millions to fix that yellow smile of his

yikes, I think it's about that time!
Yeah, he had a certain face/smile, then suddenly he looked like Pat Healy from There’s Something About Mary after he found out she liked big white teeth.

Just about the time he took center stage.

Lazy front office
They just don’t get it.

They use the tag as a delay tactic. They usually end up paying way more than they had to if they had just made a decision to pay the player at market price or move on.

With George Pickens, one of three things are going to happen:
  1. Pickens has another great year and they end up paying 2027 WR market prices to keep him, plus the $28 million tag amount. So if GP has another great yr, we’re going to pay way more than we had to. (Like they did with Dak)
  2. Pickens has a bad year, and we wasted $28 mil, move on with less to show for him than we invested.
  3. Pickens gets injured, or has a mediocre yr and we again spent $28 mil on the tag and still aren’t sure whether to keep him.
The bottom line is, the reason the tag is used sparingly is that teams that are run by quality FOs make a decision on a player - either re-sign him or move on.

Using the tag can often be a big waste of money and goodwill if you end up signing him anyway at prices that will only be higher. I’m not a fan of this move.
