I have no problem with not signing high dollar free agents. But when you stand pat and do little or nothing but then all of a sudden sign B free agents as supporting cast then you better be spot on with those selections. I want to know the opinions on the Zone what you think about standing pat on the Big Splashy signings this year. Do you agree with this strategy or not?

I agree with waiting out the start of free agency. Think Steven is a good influence on his dad in that respect. However, I feel they had a plan for lower level targets, and for what ever reason - they whiffed.
Could be several reasons why, but no getting around the fact that they have now put themselves in a bad situation.

Really running out of DE options. Still haven't resigned Hardy, Mincey or J. Crawford. And Gregory is out for the first 4 games. Currently our only DEs (the first 4 games) are Lawrence and Russell.

Yep. DE was the one spot I wished they had spent a little on. I still think a D-Line of Mario-Crawford-Thornton-DLaw would have been pretty sweet and rather affordable.

Would you guys rather go all New York Giants and throw a bunch of guaranteed money at players who are not really superstars (for the amount they're paying them) and be in cap trouble down the road when it comes to paying our big men on the O-line? I personally would rather make the prudent, frugal choices that won't kill us years down the road. I am glad Dallas has been more responsible as of late. Who says throwing a bunch of money in FA would even greatly improve our team? I'd rather have money later to pay our O-line - as I feel they will become the identity of our team if they haven't already.

Should have signed Mario and we would have been so desperate now. This leave us A)having to resign Hardy, or B) having to draft Bosa. To have the 4th pick and having to pick him is a huge screw up!!! If he's the pick, and we like him that's fine, but to HAVE to pick him now?

No, we don't HAVE to do either of those.

Well technically we don't, you're correct. However when the opposing QB's have a QB rating of 158 every week you will have wished we had!

My point is we shouldn't over-react too hard one way or another. If Ramsey is the much better player for our Defense, take Ramsey. Don't take Bosa just because we need a better pass rush. We have to think about building this long term.

Long term doesn't do anything right now for Romo, Witt, JG, and Jerry. All people on their last legs....

I am one of the most hardcore Romo fans you can find around...but we can't just blindly throw resources around. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't hate if the FO went 'all in' for Romo, but there is more to building a defense than just finding the most 'talented' players. Sometimes they just don't fit the system. It takes a calculated approach...also...what if they do go all in for Romo, sign all these big FA's, trade away future resources, etc, and they still don't win? We are going to be pretty crippled for years...

So? What would be different then the last 20 years? What about adding all these lower tier FA's we've resigned on 1 year deals? After next year then what? Sooner or later we need talent. The key is to balance FA and the draft. We've sucked at both latley and nobody seems to figure out what we are trying to accomplish here.

I understand the frustration, don't get me wrong, I want to win a Ring just as bad as you do. I am 25 years and all I know is Cowboys being mediocre. I've never seen them win a ring (I was too young for the dynasty) but we can't just go super crazy in FA, it backfires much more than it works out. Furthermore, I really believe the key to being a good team for the next decade lies in our O-line, we are going to need to have the resources to pay them down the road and keep them together to become the identity of our franchise. You have to balance between now and the future.

Personally I think early free agency is about plugging holes and that's pretty much it. If you can somehow get a great player on a deal that won't break the bank then fine but for the most part you are trying to plug as many holes with value players as possible. The whole point of this is to allow you to draft based on quality and not need. Thats what builds great teams. Its a proven strategy that most of the perennial contenders use and I don't understand why so many of you are trying to go against it.

Would I have liked to pick up a decent but not great pass rusher or safety so far?. Of course. Especially since it still is a hole for us. But I also don't want to over pay like almost everyone else does on these week 1 signings.

This is just the start of the team building period and some of you guys need to have more patience. We still have the draft to pickup a few difference makers. After that, everyone seems to be forgetting about all the vets that end up being cut in June for contract reasons. There is no reason to panic and there is certainly no reason to be throwing money around in the hopes that it somehow pays off. It rarely does.

Very well said, I agree with you on all points.
