Is it true that we could've traded ware and received something in return? We went directly from meeting with Ware to releasing him. Denver overpaid him so maybe we could've used other teams interest as leverage for a late round pick.

No.

Just like all of the other players with big salaries TNA teams couldn't trade - Revis, Steve Smith, etc.

Teams knew that they were going to be released so they just waited for it.

No one was going to take that base salary...

Done in one.

Why would another team pay 16 million for him this year when they can get him for about 10 million like the broncos.

People said that Ware did not have any leverage in these issues. I say he had all the leverage he needed since he already had a deal worked out and knew the cowboys would cut him if he did not take a pay cut.

Either way he is gone and it is done.

Jerry is lazy.....that would have required him getting off his duff and picking up a phone and make some phone calls. That would have been too difficult

Ware's salary was only 12 million and Broncos ended up paying 13 this year with bonus. But I'm sure they probably shopped him and didn't get any bites.

Norm should actually get someone from the Cowboys on and ask them if they shopped Ware rather just assume they didn't.

Say Jags or some other cellar dwellar team, maybe Jerry didn't want to do that to Ware.

Let him choose his own destination.

The guy was the face or one of the faces of his team for a long time...respect.

Sorry...12 million instead of 16 million but at the end of the day he was either going to get paid about 5-7 max if he took a pay cut or he was going to get his 10 million from Denver.

The thing that is interesting is how another team can deal with an agent of a player while said player is still under contract and does not have a tag on him. Unless Dallas gave him the option to shop himself.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

Denver is going to pay him $13M in year 1. $3M base, $5M roster bonus, $5M signing bonus.

Considering they could have done whatever they wanted with that base salary in terms of guaranteeing a portion and prorating it over the next however many years, taking on his $12M base salary wouldn't have been a problem.

The only real deterrent would have been that his scheduled base salaries were higher in the next few years than they are in Denver but given he took less, I don't see any reason why a team couldn't have negotiated that in the process.

Well, apparently Norm doesn't know anything about contracts or the salary cap.

Yes, he's making as much in base salary in Denver as he was going to in Dallas *this year*.

However, the additional years were going to put him at what, around 40 mill in base salaries over the next 3 years?

No team is going to take that on, because they have absolutely no leverage in that situation. None. What are they going to do, cut him after spending a pick on him? That'd be a disastrous trade for any FO.

really? who would pay? would anybody be willing to trade draft picks, for a player with injury history and a large salary like that? probably a low round pick. nobody would pay 1-4 round picks.

I think the more simple point by Norm is that multiple teams were interested, somebody would have negotiated a new deal before the trade that Ware would have accepted.
