"Good Chance" Colombo Will Play
Posted by rphillips at 1/4/2010 12:30 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said right tackle Marc Colombo (ankle surgery) will practice this week and if all goes well, there's a "good chance" he'll return to the starting lineup Saturday against Philadelphia.

Colombo hasn't played since fracturing his fibula and sustaining a high ankle sprain that required surgery Nov. 15 at Green Bay. Doug Free has played will in his place, and Phillips said Free could rotate some with Colombo against the Eagles.

Colombo continued his rehab during last week's practices, as did safety/core special teamer Pat Watkins (sprained PCL), who also has a chance to play. Phillips said Watkins might be more limited in practice.

Also, Phillips said running back Tashard Choice (concussion) will be reevaluted today but felt confident Choice would be symptom-free and able to play Saturday.

Quick thought: Can't say I agree with this. Free has been playing his *** off and I don't think this sends a good message to the team.

I don't like it. Keep Free in there for continuity. Colombo may be a better run blocker, but he is no better than free in pass protection, IMO.

That being said, I'll trust the coaches judgement.

Thanks. I just posted this question before your post. I agree. I don't like the idea of making changes right now. They are in a nice groove and I also don't think it sends a good message to the team. The injury to Colombo was unfortunate, but it gave us a chance to see what we had in Doug Free and I think we found out that we have one helluva good o-lineman.

Hmm, I listened to the whole PC and I didn't get that there was a good chance he starts. I thought it was good chance he plays. Which could mean he's simply active as the backup swing OT instead of McQuistan.

Maybe I heard wrong...

No problem. Yeah I hear you, the OL is clicking right now and I think Free matches up better with Philly's quick and fast defense.

Unless Free is clearly outplaying what Columbo was doing before the injury, I don't think any player likes the idea they can arbitrarily lose their job to injury.

Free has been playing well and I certainly would rather keep a good thing going myself, but I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to keep your $4M/yr starter on the bench unless he's not 100%.

I also listened to the entire PC and I didn't get a sense that Marc Columbo was going to play.

Tashard Choice, Marc Colombo could play

Cowboys running back Tashard Choice has ``a good chance'' to play on Saturday against the Eagles, coach Wade Phillips said Monday. Left tackle Marc Colombo and safety Patrick Watkins will practice this week, although Watkins will be limited.

Choice suffered a ``slight'' concussion in Dallas' 24-0 victory on Sunday night. He will be reevaluated today. Phillips said Choice felt good when he arrived at Valley Ranch on Monday morning.

``How slight it was will be determined today,'' Phillips said. ``The doctor is going to look at him again. I think there is a good chance he will be able to play. He felt fine today. He felt fine during the game.''

Colombo has been out since suffering ligament damage to his ankle a fractured fibula against Green Bay on Nov. 15. Phillips said Colombo will start the game if he's healthy, but that his replacement, Doug Free, would also play.

``He worked last week.'' Phillips said of Colombo. ``The last progression is to work with the trainers for a week and show that you can do things and he's taken that step.

``Doug Free has played well. If Columbo comes back, I think Doug will still play some. One thing, Columbo's going to be a little rusty. He's not going to be in playing shape. Doug free has shown that he can play either left tackle or right tackle. I think he's done a really good job.''

work Columbo back slowly, and even rotate him and Free in there to keep one another fresh, and one of those guys could even give FLO a breather as well. Good problem to have but keep Free starting IMO.

I think Free should still be playing for the fact that Columbo is going to be rusty from the injury but what message are you talking about? If columbo had been suspended or anything like that than that would not send a good message to the team if he came back to start over Free but that hasnt happened. A player doesnt lose his position because of injury unless the player that replaced him played just lights out than thats another story. Free has been a good surprise for us and gives us hope for the future but he hasnt been lights out to warrant taking Columbos position

Thats what I am hoping for. Free's played pretty damn good IMO.

At this point I'd hate to see them move Free out of the line up. Marc will be back in there for next season, no doubt, and could get some plays in there now to get back toward playing shape but Free has played his tail off and I'd hate to see him just go back to the bench.

you never want to send a message that if you get injured you lose your starting position. Now Free has played well, but its debateable if he has clearly played better then Colombo.

^^^nobody said Doug Free has outplayed Marc Colombo, what I am saying is that you go with "the hot hand" at the moment.

you do not understand the ramifications of having a starter losing his position to someone not clearly playing better.

If nothing else, we now know we will go into the game with 3 solid tackles. Make McQuisten inactive.

Columbo may start, but Free would get plenty of playing time since Columbo isn't in game shape. Columbo and Free also have 2 very different styles. Columbo is a mauler while Free relys on quickness and positioning. It will give their DE's something else to think about.

well, there you have the solution. shotgun with Free, other formations with Columbo.
