Roy Williams is quietly having a great season. I think most people would agree that Roy’s best season was his first (2002). Roy racked up five interceptions, three fumble recoveries and wreaked all kinds of havoc on opposing offences.

Since that season, Roy has been ridiculed for; not being a good cover guy, playing to far from the line of scrimmage, and having poor eyesight. But this season, Roy is really showing us why he is feared by the team on the other side of the football. With five games still left to play, Roy has five interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He is covering well, and punishing anyone brave/dumb enough to attempt to catch the ball in front of him.

Roy is back, and he is laying the wood. I am just glad my name is not Plaxico.

Roy is having a good season. While I don't don't like pointing out bad things about our players. I would just like to note, Williams coverage skills depend on what type of coverage he is playing. If he plays man-to-man, he stinks something fierce. If he is playing zone, he is actually one of the better cover safeties. He just can't play with his back to the ball. All or most of his INTs are from zone coverage.

i'll give any credit to him being "back" if we don't give up any big plays vs the Gints, a team with a featured "chuck it up" passing attack that has abused Roy's glaring coverage liability.

that said he's benefitting from our defense gelling in the 3-4 after a season of a half and having other players with swagger (fergie, brady, tnew, henry, ware... just about every guy on D except our other S)

Roy was never gone! It's just that this year his performance on the field provides a solid answer to stat-******. I've been so sick of people trashing Roy year in and year out, he's having his best year ever, and showing everyone something tangible they can point to and truly identify the league's best safety.

I wonder if Plex will come down with flu like symptoms before the game.

Perfect analysis nyc and that sums it up in a nutshell.

Keep in mind though, that there are not very many safeties that do thrive in man coverage. They are playing safety not CB for a reason, coverage is not the strength of there game.

People are also quick to gloss over his obvious deficiencies as well.

He struggles in man coverage and athletic TEs routinely make him look silly.

He is a good safety, but far from perfect. I'm sure defensive coordinators make an effort to exploit him and that isn't something you want from a supposed superstar.

Personally, I think the team needs to figure out how to use him more around the LOS and less in coverage.

None are perfect even the other top safeties that are compared to Roy, they give up big plays as well. Thus far this season Roy is helping to create turnovers and has a few picks himself, he is a great leader on this team and a big time intimadater. I don't expect him to be perfect but I do think he is a perfect fit for this team and feel lucky to have him as part of this team.

Athletic TEs routinely make every safety in the league look silly - that's why they're superstars who can change the game. Particularly strong safeties. They're safeties for a reason. Roy doesn't have great hips, and you can fool him if he tries to spot you up, but this isn't uncommon for safeties, even the elite ones. He can run with anyone. He's not a cover corner. He's a strong safety - the best there is.

well if he can stop giving up all the big plays i would be happy...i dont care if he ran into the ref or whatever...he gets paid big money to make big plays...also not to give up big plays too! until he starts doing that he wont be a great SS,,,just a good one...time to lose a few pounds and sure up your weaknesses roy...then you will go down in infamy as one of the greatest, until then outside of the homers you are just a good safety...not great...not ronnie lott...just a hitter...

This is the type of talk that surprises me. Roy is a strong safety with five interceptions. Asante Samuel, Kevin Kaesviharn, Rashean Mathis, and Walt Harris are the only players in the league that have more interceptions than Roy (they all have 6). Other than Kaesviharn, they are all corner backs.

Roy IS making big plays, but it is never good enough for some folks.
