Notre Dame declines a bowl game after being left out of playoffs

wow.
didn't expect that.
rumor was pop tart bowl vs byu.
interesting.

I’m lol’ing, Kstate and Iowa St opted out of bowls too despite being fined by the Big 12. This becomes a huge trend and bowl season was be kaput outside the playoffs. NCAA will throw a fit because of all the lost revenue. This could get interesting.

This is probably going to become more common now that there are 12 teams in the CFP each year.

While no one is talking about it now, I won't be surprised to see some teams opt out of their conference championship games in the future if it puts their CFP spot at risk and that's before you factor in possible injuries.

Even if teams don't opt out, I could see NIL players opting out of conference championship games for the CFP and there is also a possibility that players might opt out of the first round of CFP games eventually if they keep adding teams and rounds to the CFP.

Why don’t they try winning next year? They beat no ranked teams and lost to two CFP teams that will lose in the first round. They think they’re entitled to the CFP because they won a championship 38 years ago?

Losers. ND is the Dallas Cowboys of CFB. Living off the past. Clown coach. Always short. Screw those babies. Beat Miami maybe. Idiots.

Cool, if that what made GT get the pop tart bowl then glad they backed out. Might make that trip to Orlando

They’ve been practically meaningless forever….. at least for the past 25+ years.
They are completely worthless games when you think about it.
Yep. I think ND is taking a cautionary page from FSU which got snubbed a few years ago after going undefeated. They ended fielding a team of 3rd stringers and lost something like 63-3 to UGA in a meaningless bowl game and that program hasn't recovered since.

Now you factor in the portal too and its like whose risking their health playing in these things?

IMO it should be a mix of a seniors last game-ones that aren't locks for day 1 or 2 of the draft, and then playing the next in line players.

But do agree overall that the bowl games are fairly meaningless outside of the Universities that would like that payout.
For the bigger schools, it may suck, but for the mid to lower schools it's better than nothing.

For teams like Memphis or GA tech, bowls are a crowning achievement for a successful season. Most teams don't have realistic playoff aspirations so bowls a consolations prize. Still can't believe JMU and Tulane are in the playoff.

I know GaTech most years will never sniff the CFP and I'm fine with that. But they really blew their shot at the CFP this year, or at least getting in through the ACC.
NCSt and Pitt were just poor showing by the team. Maybe the clock struck midnight for their run, but it was just odd how bad they became.
Also, didn't help they ran King into the ground again.

I think Tech overachieved and had a great season that could have resulted in a playoff birth. But they aren't going to snub a bowl.

I feel like there is a developing chasm in the college game. Teams like UGA and OSU are built with professional college players hunting for big paydays and/or pro careers. Then there are schools like Tech or JMU which are just true student athletes competing for the love of the game. I enjoy both.

Agreed on both paragraphs.

You got a tiered system in college. OSU, UGA, Oregon(Nike $), UT, Alabama(Saban legacy), and a handful of others are in the CFP most years or every year and get the cream of the crop recruits/transfers.
Then you got another tier just below them that make up teams that make the CFP every other year or close to that.

Then you got the 3rd tier which are the schools that shoot for the highest bowl possible outside of a luck run in the CFP.

4th, 5th and so on which are student athletes looking to either transfer and/or get their degree and hope to get into the NFL.

Notre Dame thought they had the whole system figured out.

Create your own schedule. Play 1-2 good teams a year (probably lose), and then play 10-11 bottom of the barrel teams. Free playoff spot every year.

But because the sport wouldn’t let them get away with that, they do this. Losers.
