Notre Dame declines a bowl game after being left out of playoffs

I don't think most people realize that next year if the exact same thing happens and we get the exact same results and final rankings, then #11 ND would be in and #10 Miami would be out.

I can't wait to see the haters completely blow a gasket if that happens. They will melt down worse than Chernobyl.
That is why I say that ND got stuff with the CFP that will benefit them more years than not. As long as they are ranked 12 or higher they are automatically in the CFP. So complaining about it this year just wears thin. And you can't blame notre dame for the future top 12 autobid in the future...that is what the teams/conferences decide to approve for the CFP. It is what it is so I would not Melt down or any other type of situation.

I agree with others that Alabama should not be in this year. But I bet Sankey, the SEC and ESPN made sure they were not going to have Bama out of the playoffs two years in a row.

I will also say that the CFP has some weird double standards.

Remember when FSU was left out. They were undefeated, won their conference championship game but they left them out because their starting QB would not be playing.

Now this year....Ole Miss did NOT go undefeated. Ole Miss not only did not win their Conf Championship, they did not even play in the game. Their Coach is gone now....but nobody tried to make the excuse that they are not the same team without their HC like they did with the FSU argument that they are not the same team with their QB.

Again I do not think Alabama should be in. I know ND fans here will hate it but I think BYU should have been in. They lost to the number 4 team in the nation. They lost in the Conference Championship game, the same game that if they would have won both BYU and Tech would be in the CFP. In essence that final Conference champ game makes a difference. This is the part that I think some have a trouble with ND. They do not have to play that conf champ game. If they were members and played in it this year and won, they would be in.

Another thing that irks me. These conferences need to get rid of their two divisions system. They need the best two teams in the conference playing in the conference champ game like the Big 12 does. There should be no reason that a team with Duke's record is playing in the ACC Conf Champ game when other teams were better. It should have been Virginia vs Miami.

I think the G5 should have it's own championship game/playoffs. It could be their version of the NIT. If college football does wind up going to a super league they will be doing their own championship anyway.

However I do think that Tulane should be in the ACC. If SMU can buy their way in, maybe Tulane should as well. I think that Memphis should be in the ACC or the Big 12 as well. Others might disagree with me but that is ok, just my opinion

BYU lost to the same team TWICE and was not really competitive in either
so that seems like a good reason to leave them out
supposedly all 12 are considered to be legitimate contenders so having a team that got spanked twice by one of the other in the 12 does not seem logical

Why should they? The only reason the “day of the independent teams is over” is because Notre Dame is the only school with enough prestige to maintain an independent schedule.
Not that they are even in ND's league in football....But Uconn is currently and indy in football. But they are a Basketball school and that is their bread and butter. But still remains they are indy in football.

BYU did it for years. Pac 12 had it's bias against them so never asked them to join...maybe they should have, maybe the Pac would not be in the predicament they are in right now.

For the life of me I do not know why the remaining two pac teams did not merge with the mountain west even if were under the Pac Name and use it's production facilities. Wait...I know why. The Ego. That same ego is what tore the Pac apart to begin with and you have thought those two teams would have learned that lesson after being left behind. Oh well.

Still has a better record after playing a 13th game and they lost to the number 4 team in the nation while they were #4. ND lost to both Miami and ATM. The argument can be made for either team to be in. I just think BYU should have been in over ND if it came to that.

If theyG5 were not included in the playoffs maybe both would be in the CFP today. Or if bama was not in maybe one of them would have had a chance and I know they would pick ND over BYU because ND is the bigger brand.

But it is all null and void now.

They didn't lose. They got smoked. Twice. Of all the teams in the discussion for a playoff spot, they were the only one that never fared well in any game against a playoff team. They were the only team in the discussion that got run off the field twice by a playoff team.

If you want to argue ND or Bama over ND, there is some meat on that bone for sure. But anyone who watched BYU, especially in those TT games, and then watched ND and thought BYU was a better option...... whew.

This is where metrics and things like that should be the tie breakers. There are accepted formulas that show differences between teams.

But I do agree that BYU should have been in and Alabama should have been out
the special treatment Alabama got is ignored by those whining about ND

One can argue that ND did not beat anyone that got into the playoffs but neither did BYU
Did Miami?

UT lost to a bad UF team and was lucky to beat dogs like Miss St in OT late in the year.

So nah, they blew their chance.
Ala lost to a worse FL St team and barely beat a bad South Carolina team, a bad Auburn team, and a bad Missouri team. They blew their chance also!!!!

133 teams in DIV 1 football. Just add more playoff teams and this mess goes away. They're going to anyway when those TV checks come a rollin' in!!!!

Or even better, get rid of the silly conf championship games and expand the playoffs.

If they eventually go to the "Super" league, I think they will wind up with a closer version of the NFL playoff set up..

You know what's funny, so many argue that there's enough teams in the playoffs. Until their team gets left out.

Tulane and James Madison in and ND out
you support that obviously so you got no room to talk
