I was just reading a thread about Novak on the Bears board. He was very well liked and every poster had something good to say about him. A few thought they kept the wrong guy. He was apparently pursued by two other teams as well, Tampa and Buffalo.

Well that is good news! I have to admit I was pretty happy to see that Cortez could at least kick into the endzone but I think missing a 31 yard chip shot kind of gets your plate broken in Bill's house.

his kickoffs seem at least average - his moxie it what interests me. he seems to have his emotions under control and makes the clutch kick more often than not. plus he's a native of Charlottesville, VA where i now live, and where Chris Canty played for UVA. i say he wins the starting job, regardless of how little time is left before the season...
oh, and by the by - i still think parcells made cortez and the FG unit rush that kick on purpose, to see how they would react. when Cortez missed, he signed his ticket out of here...

I watched him his whole time at MD. He is a very very good kicker. When he was a soph, I thought he was on his way to being the best I had ever seen.

A little inconsistency plagued him as a senior, would hit a 56 yarder and occassionally miss a 24 yarder.

All in all had a great 4 years at MD and will find a home in the NFL. It would not suprise me even with 2 weeks to go he ends up being our kicker.

Of course he did. I'm not sure Cortez' miss was that bad for him. He got on the field and got the kick off. And, afterwards, he realized that next time he had to focus on lining up his position on the field and not look for the clock. He may still be ok.

Let's take the rook...he was one of the top 2-3 guys available this year with Nugent and Jones. I have no problem with him.

I love this quote:

Novak deserved much better. He vanquished 3 other kickers and fought to the bitter end to unseat a pampered veteran against whom he had to be no less than perfect. When Brien made that wobbly 50-yarder, Novak became expendable, and the Bears sadly lost a guy who showed he will be a clutch performer in this league. Here's to hoping the Bears remember Novak when Brien pulls his labia 3 games in and can't kick the ball off past the 40.

A pulled labia! ROFLMAO
